Today marks a historical milestone for the Aklan Piña and the Province of Aklan! 🍍🧵
The Awarding Ceremony for the Aklan Piña Certificate of Geographical Indication (GI) Registration, organized by the DTI Aklan Provincial Office, was successfully held on the evening of September 19 at the Marzon Convention Center in Andagaw, Kalibo, Aklan.
The event was graced by a diverse group of guests and stakeholders, including representatives from National Government Agencies (NGAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), the academe, industry partners -- Aklan Fashion Designers Association, Inc. (AFDA), Fashion Designers Council of Aklan Philippines, Inc. (FDCAPI) -- Aklanon micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), piña weavers, media partners, and the DTI team. They were warmly welcomed by DTI Aklan Provincial Director Romel Amihan.
In his Inspirational Message, Assistant Secretary of the DTI’s Regional Operations Group, Mr. Dominic R. Tolentino, Jr., emphasized the significance of Geographical Indication (GI). He highlighted that GI is more than just a mark of origin—it represents pride, craftsmanship, and cultural identity, driving economic benefits for the region.
The GI Certificate was awarded by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), led by Director General Atty. Brigitte M. Da Costa-Villaluz, who delivered the Keynote Address. Ms. Anna India Legaspi, President of the Aklan Piña & Indigenous Fibers Manufacturers and Traders Association, Inc. (Aklan Piña Mantra), formally received the certificate from Atty. Jesus Antonio Z. Ros of IPOPHL’s Bureau of Trademarks.
Messages of support were also delivered by several dignitaries, including Senator Loren Legarda, TESDA Secretary Jose Francisco “Kiko” Benitez, Hon. Jesus R. Marquez of Aklan’s 1st Legislative District, Hon. Florencio T. Miraflores of the 2nd Legislative District of Aklan, Kalibo Mayor Juris B. Sucro, and Ms. Gabrielle “Billie” Calizo-Quimpo, Federation Director of Soroptimist International.
The event was further graced by the presence of DTI 6 officials, led by OIC Regional Director Ma. Dinda R. Tamayo, OIC Assistant Regional Director Mutya Eusores, and the Provincial Directors from the provinces of Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo.
The Aklan Piña GI is the third in the Philippines and the second in Western Visayas, following the Guimaras mango.
