To promote Bayambangโ€™s culinary heritage among the youth, the Local Government Unit of Bayambang, in partnership with the PSU-DOST 1 Food Innovation Center (FIC), hosted โ€œBurolicious: Native Delicacy Demo," October 10.

The demonstration featured the traditional buro-making, participated in by selected students from St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic School, Bayambang National High School, and Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education program of PSU Bayambang.

Ms. Monica May B. Varilla, PSU-DOST 1 FIC Food technologist, lectured on food safety protocols, including contamination hazards during production and the proper use of tools and equipment in food preparation.

Meanwhile, Guest Speaker Mr. Norberto De Vera, owner of Nanay Dorayโ€™s Buro and a local producer, shared the significance of buro in Bayambangโ€™s culinary identity and local livelihood. โ€œBuro has helped our community in many ways," Mr. De Vera shared.

"Mahalaga na ma-preserve natin ang culinary legacy ng Bayambang, at makilala pa ng younger generations, at mas lalong ma-promote sa iba pang mga bayan ang ating mga produkto,โ€ he added.

Both Ms. Varilla and Mr. De Vera demonstrated the buro-making process, from fermentation techniques to the preparation of the native delicacy.

In her message, PSU DOST 1 FIC Head Dr. Wilma De Vera expressed her gratitude to the Bayambang LGU for spearheading the event, stressing the importance of partnerships in promoting cultural appreciation and sustaining local traditions.

Through Burolicious, Bayambang not only celebrates its delicacy but also strengthens its culinary heritage, ensuring that the art of buro-making will endure in the years to come.

Promoting creativity and innovation, Pangasinan State University Bayambang Campus' Food Innovation Center served as one of the key venues for the first ever Region 1 Creative Tour, initiated by the Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Office 1, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DIT) Regional Office 1, September 13.

Under the programโ€™s banner, โ€œRediscover Artistry, Nurture Identity, and Accelerate Growthโ€ or R.A.N.I.A.G. the event seeks to promote and support the growth of Region I's creative industries.

Gay Nora Marie A. Gapas, the Chief Tourism Operations Officer of DOT R1, spearheaded the event where she underscored the need to incorporate the event to promote local innovations and foster continued support and appreciation for the region's unique culture and talent through its products.

"With this, tuloy-tuloy po kaming tutulong sa pagpopromote ng mga local products. Provide opportunities for creative enterprises by linking local innovations with tourism," Gapas said.

The program featured various activities including live demonstration and pitching of new food research and presentation of innovative food products developed by PSU researchers and students through the PSU-DOST FIC led by Center Head Dr. Wilma De Vera.

The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including national and local artists, social media influencers, chefs, tour operators, designers, media, and government representatives. This gave everyone a chance to interact with local innovators and entrepreneurs. Also in attendance were PSU-BC representatives, including College of Arts, Sciences, and Technology (CAST) Dean Dr. Ghana L. Cahatol, Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education faculty members, and PSU-DOST 1 FIC staff.

Under the leadership of University President Dr. Elbert M. Galas and Campus Executive Director Dr. Gudelia M. Samson, the event highlighted PSU's expertise in research and innovation. This display of creativity successfully created opportunities for potential local and global partnerships.

๐™๐™Š๐˜ฟ๐˜ผ๐™”: DOST-Pangasinan conducted Technology Training on Calamansi Juice Processing for 30 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the Dagupan City Jail - Male Dormitory (DCJ-MD). The training aimed to provide skills and knowledge on the calamansi processing to the participants, supporting their reintegration into society through sustainable livelihood options.

Mr. Alvin S. Aguilan, Instructor I from Pangasinan State University - Bayambang Campus, and Ms. Monica May B. Varilla, a Professional Food Technologist from DOST Region 1 - PSU Food Innovation Center served as resource persons. Among the topics discussed are current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Basic Food Safety, and calamansi juice and concentrate processing.

This activity, requested by DCJ-MD, is part of their ongoing Skills and Enhancement Training program for both PDL and jail officers. Through these initiatives, DOST-Pangasinan supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 10: Reduced Inequality, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions by promoting skill-building, employment opportunities, and reintegration efforts for the PDLs.
