P5M bridge construction in Alfonso Castaneda to help schoolers, villagers

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (PIA) – Schoolers and ordinary villagers in barangay Pelaway in Alfonso Castaneda town will soon cross the river with a new bridge as the Provincial Local Government Unit here has released P5 million for the immediate construction of the Casecnan Overflow Bridge.

The Casecnan Overflow Bridge has been totally washed out by Super Typhoon ‘Pepito’ in November 2024.

Since then, schoolers and ordinary villagers cross the river through a makeshift wooden stairs in attending their classes and buying their daily needs from neighboring communities.

Governor Jose Gambito personally handed the check to Pelaway Barangay Captain Joel Listor and Alfonso Castaneda Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Lowella Cipriano.

He said the financial assistance will be used for the construction of a new bridge in barangay Pelaway to hasten the flow of better transportation and provide safer link for the affected villagers.

“We hope that this funding for the bridge construction project will help our schoolers in getting quality education for their future. This will support President Ferdinand Marcos’ Jr. program towards increasing the number of classrooms in the country,” Gambto said.

Barangay Captain Listor expressed gratitude to Governor Gambito for the funding assistance.

He said the construction of a new bridge will restore the vital access route for residents of Sitio Tayug, where around 104 families including schoolers of the Pelaway Elementary School.

Listor said the destroyed overflow bridge served as the main link between Sitio Tayug and other parts of barangay Pelaway.

“Since its destruction, residents have been using a temporary bridge, but it is often damaged during the rainy season, making travel difficult and unsafe,” he said.

Alfonso Castañeda MDRRM Officer Lowella Cipriano said the municipal government will immediately implement the project, with the target completion set for September this year.
