Aimed at building a more resilient health system for Benguet residents, the Benguet Provincial Health Office (PHO) successfully conducted the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Mentoring (MEM) on DRRM in Health System from May 13-14, at Ritz Legarda, Baguio City.

The two-day activity was made possible in partnership with the DOH-CAR Health Emergency Management (HEM) Unit and PDOHO Benguet.

This critical initiative involved representatives from RHUs and district hospitals from the 13 municipalities of Benguet, including the Benguet General Hospital.

Through the facilitation of experts from DOH-CAR HEM, PDOHO Benguet, PDOHO Apayao, and PHO DRRMH Team, these participants were able to conduct a comprehensive review of their local health emergency framework to ensure that their health system can adequately address any unforeseen eventuality.

This MEM activity marks an important step in helping the local health sectors move from being prepared to becoming resilient. With the use of proper assessment tools and evidence-based findings, mentors helped the participants to develop better response management strategies and address any gaps within their system.

Funded by the DOH CHD CAR โ€“ HEM Unit, this collaborative effort reinforces our commitment to a robust DRRM-H system, ensuring that Benguetโ€™s health frontline remains strong, responsive, and capable of protecting its citizens during public health emergencies and natural disasters.

Geared toward strengthening local health systems and advancing Universal Health Care (UHC) integration in the province, the Department of Health - Center for Health Development - Cordillera (DOH-CHD-CAR) conducted technical sessions at PHSO&MP Building, BeGH compound, La Trinidad, Benguet, on May 13.

The technical sessions aimed to enhance a deeper understanding and consistent utilization of the Local Health Systems Maturity Level (LHS-ML) monitoring tool. Participants included personnel from the DOH-CHD-CAR and the Provincial Health Office (PHO). The activity featured breakout sessions focused on the respective building blocks assigned to involved PHO personnel.

Benguet reaffirms its commitment to advancing and strengthening local health systems toward a healthier community.

The Benguet Provincial Health Office (PHO) conducted the Benguet United for Nurturing and Thriving Infant and Safe Motherhood (B.U.N.T.I.S.) Congress on May 7 at the Gov. Ben Palispis Hall, Capitol, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The congress aimed to empower pregnant women and their families through health education, maternal care awareness, and access to essential healthcare services.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Meliarazon F. Dulay, PHO II, emphasized the importance of taking care of one's health as part of the provincial government's "HEALTHIER Benguet" flagship program, overseeing essential sectors such as safe and healthy pregnancy and motherhood.

She encouraged expectant mothers to avail themselves of the healthcare services offered by the province and highlighted the importance of maintaining good health before and during pregnancy to ensure the well-being of both mother and child.

Representing Hon. Gov. Melchor D. Diclas, Executive Assistant David Cabuten stressed the importance of family support, especially from fathers, during pregnancy and regular check-ups.

He described motherhood as a great responsibility and pregnancy as a gift from God that must be cared for properly. He also encouraged the public to trust hospitals, doctors, and healthcare workers, noting the continued support of the Provincial Health Office and district hospitals in ensuring safe motherhood and healthy communities.

Meanwhile, Hon. Lady Charmaine Molintas-Likigan, chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Committee on Health and Sanitation, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gather and participate in the information and awareness campaign.

She reminded mothers and parents that caring for maternal health means caring for the future of children and communities.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Jocelyn E. Legaspi, PHO I, thanked all participants, partner agencies, barangay health workers, doctors, and healthcare personnel who contributed to the success of the event.

In addition to various services, lectures were presented by Dr. Evelyn Camantiles-Tello, Dr. Gazelle Marilag B. Baysa-Pee, and Ms. Amelia Cayap.

DENGUE CASES UPDATE MW 16 | For the period April 19-25, 2026 (Morbidity Week 16), there were 23 dengue cases newly recorded in the province of Benguet which bring to a total of 467 from January 1 to April 25, 2026, 25% lower compared to the 626 cases monitored on the same period in CY2025.

Data from the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit show that the municipality of Itogon has the highest case with 158 followed by the municipalities of Atok and La Trinidad with 127 and 27, respectively. Atok recorded a 274% increase compared to the same period in CY2025 which only had thirty-four (34) cases. The municipality of La Trinidad though has a 70% decrease which had ninety-one (91) cases at the same period.

The public is still urged to be cautious and avoid mosquito bites. Practice the 4S Strategy Kontra Dengue:

1. SEEK EARLY CONSULTATION | Consult your nearest healthcare center for proper medical treatment and advice when symptoms such as fever, headache, joint and muscle pains, diarrhea, loss of appetite, vomiting, and or rashes are observed or experienced;

2. SEARCH AND DESTROY MOSQUITO BREEDING SITES | Check your surroundings for stagnant waters and clean these areas to prevent mosquitoes to breed and multiply. Practice 4Ts: TAOB, TAKTAK, TUYO, TAKIP;

3. SELF-PROTECTION | This rainy season, wear long-sleeved clothing, and use insect sprays, insect repellants, mosquito nets, and window screens; and

4. SUPPORT FOGGING/SPRAYING DURING OUTBREAKS.
