Daniel 2, 7, and 8 are not disconnected prophecies. They follow the same broad flow of history, with each vision repeating and expanding upon the one before it.
Daniel 2 lays the foundation by showing the rise and fall of the great world empires: Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, divided Rome, and finally the everlasting kingdom of God.
Daniel 7 follows the same historical flow through the lion, bear, leopard, and dreadful fourth beast, but now the little horn is brought to view. This little horn represents the antichrist power that rises from Rome, speaks great words against God, persecutes the saints, thinks to change times and law, and continues until the judgment sits.
Daniel 8 repeats and expands the pattern again. It begins after Babylon and clearly identifies Medo-Persia and Greece. So when the prophecy moves beyond Greece, we should expect the next major power to be Rome, because Daniel has already established the flow of history.
This is where many go wrong. They isolate Daniel 8 from Daniel 2 and 7, then try to make the little horn Antiochus Epiphanes. But Antiochus does not fit the prophetic flow. After Greece, Daniel points us to Rome — not a minor Seleucid king.
In Daniel 8, the little horn first represents Pagan Rome, conquering horizontally across the earth. Then the prophecy shifts upward, showing the same Roman power in its Papal phase, exalting itself toward heaven and attacking God’s truth, sanctuary, and people.
This is one of the great keys to Bible prophecy: God repeats, then expands. Daniel 2 gives the foundation. Daniel 7 brings the antichrist power to view. Daniel 8 sharpens the focus by showing Rome’s transition from Pagan conquest to Papal exaltation.
Revelation follows the same pattern. The seven churches, seven seals, and seven trumpets also move through history in repeating and expanding cycles, showing the great controversy from different angles and adding more detail each time.
When we see the pattern, Daniel becomes much clearer. These prophecies are not scattered fragments. They are one progressive revelation of world history, the rise of the antichrist power, the judgment, and the final victory of Christ’s kingdom.
