LAHAR ADVISORY FOR MAYON VOLCANO UNDER TROPICAL DEPRESSION ADA
16 January 2026
06:00 AM

Based on the Tropical Cyclone Bulletin #8 issued at 05:00 AM, 16 January 2026 by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Tropical Depression “ADA” will affect the eastern coast of Southern Luzon on 16 to 17 January 2026. Due to its trajectory, “ADA” is expected to bring heavy to intense (100-200mm) rainfall that could generate volcanic sediment flows or lahars, muddy streamflows or muddy run-off in rivers and drainage areas of Mayon Volcano. DOST-PHIVOLCS thus strongly recommends increased vigilance and readiness of communities in pre-determined zones of lahar and related hazards in Albay Province.

Heavy to intense rainfall may generate syn-eruption lahars on major channels draining the southern to eastern slopes of Mayon Volcano by incorporating loose material from new pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits of its ongoing eruption. These erodible PDC deposits occupy the Mi-isi, Bonga and Basud Gullies and will likely feed generally in-channel but hot lahars in the Mi-isi and Binaan Channels in Daraga Municipality, Mabinit, Bonga, Matanag, Buyuan and Padang in Legazpi City, and Lidong and Basud Rivers in Sto. Domingo Municipality. Hot lahars could cause scalding upon contact that could lead to serious and life-threatening injuries. In addition, older and erodible eruption deposits on the watershed areas of the southwestern slopes of the volcano can be remobilized as non-eruption lahars in the Masarawag, Maninila and related distributary channels in Guinobatan Municipality. Mayon lahars can threaten communities downstream of all the above channels with inundation, impacting force (when carrying boulders), burial and wash out (even to sea off the eastern slopes).

DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly advises the communities and local government units of the above identified areas of risk to continually monitor the typhoon conditions and take pre-emptive response measures for their safety from “ADA.”
