The Materials Science Division (MSD) was honored as the Best Research and Development Division for 2025 during the 125th Founding Anniversary of the DOST–Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) held on July 1, 2026, at the DOST Compound in Bicutan, Taguig City. This year's celebration carried the theme, "125 𝙏𝙖𝙤𝙣 𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙖𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙠𝙤𝙙 𝙨𝙖 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙮𝙖: 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙗 𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙞𝙮𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙮𝙖, 𝙏𝙚𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙝𝙞𝙮𝙖, 𝙄𝙣𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙮𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙩 𝙆𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖".

Ms. Sharyjel Cayabyab Gelilang, Science Research Specialist II of the Materials Science Division at the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), has been selected as one of the innovators in the 2026 Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) Global Philippines cohort. The prestigious program is run by the Royal Academy of Engineering and funded by the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. This year, the programme welcomes 46 global innovators from 5 countries, including the Philippines, recognizing outstanding researchers with promising innovations and leadership potential.

Adding to this remarkable achievement, Ms. Gelilang's developed technology, the Ceramic Water Filter Cartridge, was recognized among the Top 10 finalists during the programme's pitching competition held in London, United Kingdom last July 3, 2026. This accomplishment highlights the innovation and dedication of Filipino researchers in developing technologies that address real-world challenges.

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of DOST-ITDI is inviting applications for the Career Incentive Program (CIP) under the GIA-funded research project:

🔬 Development and Pre-clinical Validation of 3D Printed Porous Bioceramic Orbital Implant for Anophthalmic Socket Application (3D BiO-I)

We are looking for passionate and dedicated MS or PhD graduates in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Materials Science and/or Engineering, or related fields who are interested in contributing to the development and validation of innovative biomaterials for healthcare applications.

Ideal candidates should have knowledge and experience in:
✔️ Molecular biology and laboratory techniques
✔️ Mammalian cell culture
✔️ Biological evaluation of medical devices
✔️ Chemical and toxicological risk assessment

PBBM highlighted this milestone and the broader efforts of Philippine scientific institutions in addressing the plastic waste challenge during the International High-Level Forum on NUTEC PLASTICS held last November 25–26, 2025, at Conrad Hotel Manila.

During the forum, DOST-ITDI also showcased its innovative recycling technologies and engaged with both local and international delegates, many of whom are actively seeking solutions that support a more circular economy. The forum served as a launchpad for NUTEC PLASTIC, an ongoing initiative of the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The event gathered key figures, including DOST Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., DOST Undersecretary for R&D Dr. Leah Buendia, IAEA Director General Mariano Grossi, ADB President Masato Kanda, and DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro.

In a parallel event, the PREx prototype house at PNRI in Quezon City was officially inaugurated. As the centerpiece of the NUTEC PLASTIC initiative, it stands as a tangible demonstration of how science, technology, and strong collaboration can produce impactful solutions to environmental challenges.
