First Day of JOYREAD Beta Testing
Today, selected students tried JOYREAD, a gamified reading intervention app designed for Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) students. The app contains 100 reading passages, each followed by a comprehension check.
To get started, students simply scan the QR code and register themselves. They then enter the class code provided by their tutor to gain access to the app. Once logged in, students can explore and enjoy the different stories available.
During the reading session, the student reads the passage aloud while the tutor listens and provides assistance. The tutor corrects mispronounced words and helps the student with words that they find difficult to read. After completing the reading, the student proceeds to the assessment section, which consists of 10 comprehension questions. Students need to answer the questions correctly before they can proceed to the next passage.
As part of the initial testing of JOYREAD’s effectiveness and impact, I noticed that the students were genuinely engaged with the app. One student was able to complete five reading passages within just 30 minutes. Their eagerness to continue reading and complete more passages in one sitting, especially to earn more badges, suggests that the gamified features make the reading activity more engaging and interactive for them.
This first-day experience also showed that JOYREAD offers something relatively new and exciting to the students. Instead of seeing reading intervention as a routine academic task, they appeared to enjoy the challenge of completing passages, answering comprehension questions, and earning rewards.
First and more days to come guys!!
