Where Growth Begins: The Story of Ma. Laila Cristina P. Balin, Chairperson of Marinduque Farmer Beneficiaries Agriculture Cooperative

Some stories donโ€™t begin with a clear plan they unfold through curiosity, experience, and a willingness to try. The journey of Ma. Laila Cristina P. Balin is one of those stories. It is simple, honest, and deeply rooted in real-life struggles, yet shaped by a growing sense of purpose and commitment to others.

Laila was born on July 15, 1985, in Cabuyo, Torrijos, Marinduque. Growing up as the only child of separated parents Eduardo Balin from Bicol and Liberty Pergis from Marinduque, she experienced early on the kind of challenges that quietly build a personโ€™s strength. She describes her family background as somewhat complicated, being the eldest on her motherโ€™s side and third among six on her fatherโ€™s. But instead of being weighed down by it, she learned how to adapt and stand on her own.

Her early education took place in her hometown, attending Cabuyo Elementary School and later Tigwi National High School. Determined to gain practical skills, she pursued further studies in Manila, taking up a ladderized course in Computer Programming using Java at AMA, along with Computer Secretarial and Computer-Aided Design at Xavier Technical Training Center. Over time, she continued joining various trainings even abroad, always open to learning new things and improving herself.

Still, beyond all these, Laila holds on to a dream that feels closer to her heart she wants to become a lawyer. Itโ€™s not just about ambition, but about wanting to do more and be more, especially in ways that can help others.

At home, she is a partner to German Fabrigas and a mother to their three children. Like many women, she balances family life with work and responsibilities, doing what she can to provide and be present at the same time.

Her story in the cooperative began in 2024, not out of long-term plans, but simply because she got curious and because someone she trusts, kept encouraging her. At first, she admits, she saw the cooperative as just a group or โ€œsamahan.โ€ But as she became more involved, her understanding deepened.

Now, she sees it as something more meaningful a group of people with a shared goal, supporting each other through both struggles and successes, and working together to improve their lives. It became not just an organization, but a community.

She started as a secretary, quietly doing her part, until she eventually stepped into a bigger role as Chairperson of the Board of Directors. It wasnโ€™t something she chased, but something she grew into earning the trust of the people around her.

Of course, leadership comes with its own challenges. For Laila, one of the hardest parts is keeping peace and harmony within the group. Managing different personalities, keeping members motivated, and finding ways to fund projects are not easy tasks. But she continues to face them, one step at a time, doing what she can.

In her personal life, she openly shares that she has faced many struggles, especially when it comes to finances. Some problems, she says, seem to work themselves out over time, while others remain. Still, she chooses not to dwell too much on them. She simply keeps going, trusting that things will eventually fall into place.

Laila may not have a specific motto in life, but the way she lives says a lot. She gives her best in everything she does, especially when it benefits others. She dreams big not just for herself, but for the people around her.

More than anything, she hopes to leave something behind not material things, but a lasting impact. She wants to be remembered as someone kind, someone who helped, someone who became part of other peopleโ€™s success stories.

And in her own quiet way, she already is.

Empowering ARBOs Through Strategic Planning in Torrijos

TORRIJOS, Marinduque | Strengthening the foundation for sustainable agrarian reform communities, Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Organizations (ARBOs) in Torrijos actively participated in a two-day Strategic Development Planning and Workshop held on March 17-18, 2026, at the MDRRM Hall in Brgy. Poblacion, Torrijos, Marinduque.

The activity gathered ARBO key officers in a collaborative learning environment aimed at enhancing their capacity to lead and manage their respective organizations more effectively. Anchored on long-term development goals, the workshop focused on equipping participants with the necessary skills and competencies to formulate their Strategic Development Plans for 2027โ€“2029.

Serving as the resource person was Dr. Merryrose R. Palma of Marinduque State University, who guided the participants through comprehensive discussions and hands-on exercises on strategic planning processes. Her sessions highlighted the importance of clear vision-setting, situational analysis, goal alignment, and actionable strategies tailored to the unique needs of ARBOs.

Participants engaged in workshops that allowed them to assess their organizational strengths, identify challenges, and map out realistic and sustainable development pathways. The training also emphasized participatory planning, encouraging officers to involve their members in decision-making processes to ensure inclusivity and shared accountability.

More than just a technical exercise, the activity fostered a sense of unity and renewed commitment among ARBO leaders. By the end of the workshop, each organization had initiated a structured roadmap that will guide their operations and development initiatives over the next three years.

This initiative underscores the continuing efforts to empower ARBOs in Torrijos, Marinduque, recognizing their vital role in driving rural development and improving the socio-economic conditions of agrarian reform beneficiaries.

As these organizations move forward with clearer direction and strengthened capabilities, the future of ARBOs in Torrijos looks more strategic, resilient, and growth-oriented.

Alpha A. Gutierrez, A Teacher With No Classroom

In the quiet strength of everyday life, there are individuals whose journeys are not defined by titles alone, but by the lives they touch and the faith they carry. One such story is that of Alpha A. Gutierrez, a woman whose path may not have followed her original dream, yet unfolded into a life of meaningful service and unwavering dedication.

Born on January 4, 1962, in Sta. Cruz, Manila, Alpha grew up as the second among four siblings under the guidance of her parents, Engr. Lucas C. Alfaro and Divina Pastora M. Alfaro. From a young age, she understood the value of perseverance and responsibility, traits that would later shape her journey.

Her early years were spent in Cecilia Apostol Elementary School, followed by her secondary education at Caloocan High School. She pursued higher education at Lyceum of the Philippines University, reaching her third year in college. Although she did not complete her degree, Alpha never stopped learning. She enriched herself through vocational courses under TESDA, earning certifications in Driving (4 Wheels NC II), Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II, and Health and Wellness Therapy NC II, proof of her commitment to growth and adaptability.

Like many, Alpha once dreamed of becoming a teacher. Life, however, had different plans.

โ€œI want to be a teacher someday,โ€ she once held close to her heart. But instead of a classroom, she found her calling in the community becoming a Barangay Nutrition Scholar. For six years, she served tirelessly at the grassroots level, guiding families toward better health and nutrition. In many ways, she still became a teacher, only her classroom had no walls, and her lessons were lived, not just spoken.

Her dedication did not go unnoticed. Through determination and faith, she earned her eligibility from the Civil Service Commission, opening the door to a more permanent role in public service. Today, with 11 years as a government employee, Alpha looks back with gratitude.

โ€œI was so grateful and thanked the Lord for His favor,โ€ she shares, a testament to her deep-rooted faith.

Beyond her professional life, Alphaโ€™s greatest pride lies in her family. She has been married for 39 years to Marlito M. Gutierrez, with whom she raised six children. Her journey as a wife and mother reflects the same commitment she brings to her work, grounded in love, sacrifice, and resilience.

In 2015, Alpha expanded her service by joining the cooperative movement. For her, a cooperative is more than just an organization, it is a community built on compassion and shared purpose.

โ€œCoop is sharing and caring,โ€ she explains. โ€œIt helps you earn, and in times of emergency, it becomes a place where you can rely on.โ€

Her leadership journey within the cooperative is marked by dedication. From serving as a Member of the Board of Directors (2019โ€“2021), to becoming a Compliance Officer (2021โ€“2026), and contributing to committees of Kapatirang Marinduqueno-Poctoy Agriculture Cooperative. Alpha continues to play a vital role in strengthening the organization. She acknowledges, however, that challenges remain particularly in fostering unity and ensuring sustainability. Yet, she faces these with the same optimism that defines her life.

โ€œOur life goes on. Just trust God and lean on His wordโ€”He will direct our paths.โ€

This belief has carried her through lifeโ€™s uncertainties, shaping her into a woman of quiet courage and enduring hope.

Today, Alpha lives by a simple yet powerful motto: โ€œLearn while you earn for the better.โ€ It is a reflection of her journey, a continuous pursuit of growth, even in the face of lifeโ€™s unexpected turns.

Though she may not have stood in front of a traditional classroom, Alpha A. Gutierrez has become a teacher in the most profound sense, educating through example, inspiring through service, and leading with faith. Her story reminds us that sometimes, the path we are meant to walk is not the one we planned, but it can still lead us exactly where we are meant to be.

Meet Marissa - MACABACO's General Manager

In every community, there are individuals whose lives quietly inspire others through dedication, service, and unwavering faith. One such individual is Marissa Querubin Quintero, a woman whose life journey reflects perseverance, love for family, and a deep commitment to helping others in her community.

Born on August 24, 1969, in Maranlig, Torrijos, Marinduque, Marissa grew up in a humble yet nurturing environment. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs Querubin, whose guidance and values shaped the character of her children. Growing up in a large family with her seven siblings, Marissa learned early the importance of unity, responsibility, and resilience.

Her early education began at Maranlig Elementary School, followed by her secondary education at Maranlig Barangay High School. Like many young students, Marissa carried a dream in her heart to become a successful teacher someday. She believed that teaching was a noble profession that could shape lives and open opportunities for others.

Although life did not lead her to the classroom in the traditional sense, Marissa never lost the spirit of teaching. She pursued vocational studies in Computer Secretarial at Datapro Computer School, equipping herself with practical skills that would later help her in various community engagements.

Marissa built a loving family with her husband, Froilan Quitoriano Quintero, and together they were blessed with five children. As a mother, she devoted her life to guiding her children with love, discipline, and strong values. Today, her joy continues to grow as a proud grandmother to five APOs.

While her childhood dream of becoming a teacher did not unfold in the traditional way, Marissa found her own path to teaching, through service to the community. In many ways, she became a teacher beyond the four walls of a classroom. As a community worker, she devoted herself to educating and guiding people in matters that improve their lives.

She became a nutrition advocate, helping raise awareness about proper nutrition, health, and well-being within the community. Through her work, she helped families understand the importance of proper nourishment, especially for children and mothers. Her efforts contributed to strengthening community health and encouraging better lifestyle practices.

In addition, Marissa also became an advocate for cooperative development, promoting the importance of cooperation, collective effort, and community empowerment. By encouraging people to participate in cooperatives, she helped open opportunities for economic growth, financial awareness, and community solidarity.

In these roles, Marissa fulfilled her dream of teaching in her own meaningful way. She may not have stood in front of a formal classroom, but she taught people through example, guidance, and service. Her influence reached beyond textbooks, touching lives, empowering families, and strengthening the community she loves.

Guided by her life motto, โ€œNasa tao ang gawa, nasa Diyos ang awa,โ€ Marissa believes that while people must work hard and do their part, it is God who ultimately blesses and guides every effort. This belief has shaped her outlook in life and strengthened her commitment to serve others with humility and faith.

Today, at 56 years old, Marissa Querubin Quintero continues to be a pillar of inspiration in her community. Her story reminds us that dreams may take different paths, but when guided by purpose, compassion, and faith, they can still be fulfilled in ways that make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
