Ageless Passion in Reading: Meet Ikit Pa-eg
By Gly Nette F. Pala-os
In a world dominated by technology, it's truly inspiring to encounter individuals who hold steadfast to timeless hobbies. One such person is Mr. Napa-eg Luya, an 88-year-old man who has discovered solοΏΎace and joy in the world of books. Despite his age, he remains an avid reader, proving that passion knows no boundaries when it comes to the written word.
Known affectionately as "Ikit Paeg" in his community of Talubin, Mr. Luya resides with his wife, Petra Luya, as their children have already established their own families. Their enduring love for each other, despite their age, is truly admirable and adds to the charm of their story.
Ikit has spent his entire life immersed in the world of literature. His diverse taste in genres, ranging from classical literature to contemporary fiction, is a testament to his voracious appetite for reading. He also finds great joy in reading publications like the Watchtower of the Jehovah's Witnesses. AcοΏΎcording to him, "Reading books is not only a way to cherish God, but also a tool for empowerment."
One remarkable aspect of Ikit Paegβs reading journey is his ability to read without glasses at the age of 88. His exceptional eyesight is a testament to his overall eye health, which could be attributed to a combination of factors such as genetics, a healthy lifestyle, and proper eye care practices. HowοΏΎever, he also mentioned an interesting belief passed down to him by his parents regarding enhancing eye health through the consumption of a particular food. When asked
about his secret to being able to read without glasses, Ikit Paeg attributed it to his consumption of "oteh han ahuk," which he believes strengthens his eyes. He explained that when eating "otey," it is important to ensure that it is not the "otey of the manok" chicken), but rather the "otey" of the dog, as dogs have better night vision compared to chickens.
Intriguing as it may sound, it's important to note that the benefits of "oteh han ahuk" for eye health have not been scientifically proven. However, his unwavering belief in this practice adds a unique and intriguing aspect to his reading journey.
Ikit Napa-eg Luya's story is a testament to the timeless power of literature and the unwavering passion of individuals who hold on to their hobbies. His love for reading has not only enriched his own life but also inspired those around him.
May the students like me be inspired by their enduring love and most especially on Mr. Luya's dedication to the written word. The love of reading should be indeed developed among us learners for this is something that we can use as we battle the challenges we meet in our
academic life. What we learn inside the classroom will never be enough. We too have to help ourselves and delve into these printed materials to be able to discover other ideas of those who
may have already left the world or of those who are still with us.
Finally, may their story reminds us that age should never hinder our pursuit of passions, and that the magic of books can transcend time and generations.
