Not every hazard is a disaster.

Many people use the words hazard and disaster interchangeably-but they're not the same.

A hazard is a potential threat, such as a typhoon, earthquake, flood, or landslide. It only becomes a disaster when it causes serious damage and overwhelms a community's ability to cope.

The good news? Disaster risk can be reduced.

Through proper land use planning, environmental protection, resilient infrastructure, early warning systems, and community preparedness, we can prevent hazards from turning into disasters.
