Efforts to build a reliable unified geospatial database for ancestral lands gathered support as the National Workshop on Ancestral Domain Mapping and Geospatial Information System took place September 1โ€“4, 2026 at Oazis Hotel, Butuan City. Spearheaded by the NCIP Caraga Regional Office, the activity gathered key personnel from the Ancestral Domains Office (ADO), Regional Directors, TMSD Chiefs and AFMSD Chief, Engineers, and GIS Specialists representing the jurisdictions under Cluster 2 composed of

Formal proceedings opened September 2 with messages from Hon. Atty. Leslie Mae B. Plaza, Ethnographic Commissioner for Southern and Eastern Mindanao, and Hon. Atty. Alberto R. Lagamon, Commissioner for Northern and Western Mindanao.

Engr. Katherine P. Gullunan, Chief, Resource Management Division, presented an overview on ancestral domains mapping and geospatial information system, the workshop objectives, and the expected outputs, while Engr. Shelley Joy Ruth S. Calata, Chief, Recognition Division, discussed workshop mechanics, data requirements, and the validation procedures. The participants then moved into successive working sessions validating indicative map shapefiles, standardization of attribute tables, CRS, administrative boundaries, and printing of certifications.

Regional teams presented their completed outputs and submitted signed certifications. The activity concluded September 3 with the synthesis of presentations and consolidation of agreements, followed by closing remarks from Dir. Ordonio P. Rocero Jr., Regional Director of NCIP Caraga.

The workshop strengthens coordination between the Ancestral Domains Office (ADO), and all regional and field offices toward building one consistent and trusted geospatial database. This harmonized system aims to speed up the processing of ancestral domain titles, reduce boundary overlaps, and firmly safeguard the ancestral lands of Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs).

A significant step toward strengthening Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ role in biodiversity conservation was undertaken today as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Ecosystems Management and Biodiversity Conservation (EMBC) team, and the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) formally kicked off the formulation and enhancement of the Ancestral Domain Sustainable Development and Protection Plan (ADSDPP) and Community Conservation Plan (CCP) in priority ancestral domains across the Davao and Caraga Regions.

๐‰๐ฎ๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐ข๐ ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ง๐š paid a visit and met with Indigenous leaders from the priority ancestral domains, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in protecting forests, wildlife, and the rich biodiversity within ancestral lands.

As part of the initiative, the ADSDPPs and CCPs in ancestral domains will be enhanced through close collaboration with the EMBC team and PEF, integrating biodiversity conservation priorities and strengthening community-led stewardship.

Dr. Jayson Ibรกรฑez, PEF Director for Operations, highlighted the vital role of these plans in sustaining biodiversity and protecting the countryโ€™s natural heritage, particularly the Philippine Eagle , the Philippinesโ€™ National Bird and an important symbol of healthy forest ecosystems.

Representing the Caraga Region, Indigenous Peoples leaders and representatives from For Davao Region, ๐‚๐€๐ƒ๐“๐ฌ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ•, ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—, ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ”, ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ”, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ— actively participated in the activity, bringing forward the perspectives and aspirations of Indigenous communities in the sustainable management and protection of their ancestral domains.

The activity also included a special tour at the Philippine Eagle Center, where participants had the opportunity to witness the magnificent ๐‘ฝ๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’ˆ๐’, the Philippine Eagle featured on the โ‚ฑ1,000 banknote. The encounter served as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility to protect one of the countryโ€™s most iconic and critically endangered species.

In the afternoon, participants from the Davao and Caraga Regions proceeded to breakout sessions focusing on the ADSDPP/CCP formulation process, including discussions on the various steps, activities, and proposed schedules for implementation.

Through stronger partnerships, empowered Indigenous communities, and science-based conservation, ancestral domains can remain thriving homes for both people and biodiversity.

One Eagle. Many Landscape. Shared Stewardship.
