🌊𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲🌊 is celebrated every 8th of June. This year’s theme, “𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭,” highlights the commitment of world leaders to establish and strengthen 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 for the effective conservation of our oceans.

It serves as a reminder that our oceans regulate the climate, sustain livelihoods, and support biodiversity. Achieving successful implementation requires a strong collective effort, accountability, and sustained public engagement.

This is a call for each and every one of us to work together in protecting our oceans and achieving this shared goal. Together, let us protect our blue planet for future generations and ensure that our oceans remain healthy, productive, and resilient for years to come.

𝙈𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙖𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙥𝙪𝙖 commonly known as the 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡 or 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐚 is a jellyfish species native to western Pacific. They can be found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines specifically in Leyte, Caramoan, and the Visayan Sea.
Like the gentle giants of the Giant Clam Village, these species of jellyfish also have a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae which gives its beautiful colors (Field Guide to the Jellyfish of Western Pacific, 2021)

Observed every June 1st, this global celebration promotes awareness and conservation of coral reefs, one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth. As rising ocean temperatures continue to threaten reef survival, every individual can make a difference through responsible environmental stewardship and citizen science initiatives.

Be a voice for our reefs. Protect, conserve, and help restore these underwater treasures before their colors fade from our seas.

Look! A seahorse❗ 👀

Did you know that a seahorse is a fish? And yes, they are also found in the GCVPA! 😊🎉

Seahorses are small, uniquely shaped marine fishes belonging to the genus Hippocampus within the family Syngnathidae. There are approximately 46 to 54 recognized species found globally and atleast 10 are documented in the Philippines. They are known for their horse-like heads, armor-like bodies, and highly unusual reproductive systems.

These fishes are uniquely famous because they are the only fish that swims vertically and that the only fish that it is the male that carries the pregnancy and gives birth!

Another fascinating fact about seahorses is that they are delightfully romantic. 💕They are monogamous creatures as they always remain faithful to only one partner their whole lives. 😊 (wikipedia, seafdec.aqd)

Did you know?🤔

While many sea stars have five arms, some can have 10 or even more! 💕

Protoreaster nodosus, most commonly known as the chocolate chip sea star or horned sea star is one of the marine species commonly found in the GCVPA. It is a large species of marine echinoderm widely recognized for the dark, conical horns decorating its upper body.

This type of starfish or sea stars resembles a chocolate chip cookie, featuring light tan, brown, or reddish coloration paired with black, bone-hard k***s (tubercles) on its top side. It typically grows as a rigid, five-pointed star with thick, tapering arms but anomalies with four or six arms occasionally occur.

It reaches a notable size of 30 to 40 centimeters (12 to 16 inches) in diameter and the underside possesses brightly colored pink or purple tube feet aligned in rows along each arm, which move using a specialized water vascular system. (wikipedia, inaturalist)

These are beautiful creatures that belong to the sea. 💕 So next time you see it along the shore, please remember, do not pick it up and put it away from the water. 🙂

𝙃𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙨 𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙨, also known as the 🐎 𝚑𝚘𝚛𝚜𝚎'𝚜 𝚑𝚘𝚘𝚏 𝚌𝚕𝚊𝚖, 🍓 𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚠𝚋𝚎𝚛𝚛𝚢 𝚌𝚕𝚊𝚖, or 🐻 𝚋𝚎𝚊𝚛 𝚙𝚊𝚠 𝚌𝚕𝚊𝚖 is also one of the species of giant clams found in the GCVPA. This species is found in the shallow waters of the 🌊 Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Their shell is 𝙨𝙪𝙗-𝙧𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙡 and are deeply ribbed, featuring 𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐰𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲-𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬. The mantle is green-yellow and is often found with grey-brown spots. It does not extend over the edge of the shell unlike other the giant clams species found in the GCVPA.

These are average-sized giant clams, typically reaching roughly about 𝟸𝟸 𝚌𝚖. in length, but has been found to grow to a maximum length of approximately 𝟺𝟻 𝚝𝚘 𝟻𝟶 𝚌𝚖 (FAO Manual).

✨𝙏𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙘𝙣𝙖 𝙨𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙖✨, also known as the fluted giant clam or scaly clam is one of the species of giant clams found inside the GCVPA. It is a large species of bivalve mollusk native to the shallow coral reefs of the 🌊𝕊𝕠𝕦𝕥𝕙 ℙ𝕒𝕔𝕚𝕗𝕚𝕔🌊 and 🌊𝕀𝕟𝕕𝕚𝕒𝕟 𝕆𝕔𝕖𝕒𝕟🌊.

It is most easily identified by the prominent, 🍃 leaf-like scales or projections on its shell, known as ✨𝙨𝙘𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙨✨, which are more pronounced and widely spaced than those of other giant clam species. It is a mid-sized giant clam, typically growing up to 40 cm. or 16 inches across. Some specimens have been found reaching 50 cm. The fleshy mantle that extends past the shell edges is highly variable in color, often featuring mottled patterns of 🤎𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙣, 💜𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙡𝙚, 💚𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣, 💛𝙮𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬, 𝙤𝙧 💙𝙗𝙡𝙪𝙚. (iNaturalist, NOAA Fisheries)
