BARANGAY PATAG HISTORY

Although there was no total record in the Philippine History about the beginning of Barangay Patag, it was said to have been known discovered by the native HIGA-ONON and MAMANWA’S due to its being noted abundantly of thick MARC CAT TAIL which means in the Higa-onon native people dialect as BALIW or BAAGAS PATAG, good essential for mat making, that even today these kinds of

mats are being peddled in Mindanao and different parts of our country. This abundant growing Cat Tail that had thickly grown in this place was due to its natural environment in centuries which indicated that this place was a vast of forest. All area in the early days having been bounded by the boundaries of Barangay Carmen, Canitoan, Kauswagan, and Bulua in Northern portion where the remaining area of Barangay Carmen becomes integral part in territorial jurisdiction of BAAGAS PATAG before the creation into a regular Barrio of PATAG in JANUARY 29, 1962 pursuant to the City Resolution No. 38 of Cagayan de Oro respectively, and embodied in R.A. No. 2370, otherwise known as the Barrio Charter Law of the Philippines. In the past, it was legally and popularly showed that the HISTORICAL BACKGROUND of The District of Patag, reckoning from the centuries which dissolved that the early medieval Native people of Bukidnon under the leadership of DATU BAGANI had spread their settlement activities for migration into the hinterlands of the northwestern portion of Bukidnon seeking to choose a better climate condition for their daily living and have Incidentally reached into a river banks of the east, thereby found as thickly growing “LAMBAGO” trees and named after this place as “KALAMBAGOHAN” because of the thickly “LAMBAGO” trees that flourished in the area which today has become the integral part of territorial jurisdiction of Cagayan de Oro City. During the past cultural survival, the Native people of Bukidnon have further reached their settlement to a barely Village, where they went across a tract of marshy district composed of thick and tall growing MARC CAT TAIL, bearing a long flat leaves which they discovered to be good and essential materials for the mat making and which led them to name and called the place as BAAGAS PATAG DISTRICT, a meaningful primitive name and historical origin of the place. While these Bukidnon native peacefully sheltered their living in BAAGAS PATAG, they were surprised when a tribal MONGOLIAN NORMANDIC GROUP OF MUSLIM ANCESTRY under the leadership of RAJAH MODA SAMPORAN suddenly reached Baagas Patag and told them to surrender so that they will not be taken away by his comrades for slavery. Few days after, DATU BAGANI learned about the sarcastic behavior treatment of Rajah Moda Samporna to his followers, he immediately sent one of his two daughter to see and negotiate to the Mongolian Normadic Group Muslim Leader in order to resolved the problem of the sentiment of his followers. During their negotiation, Rajah Moda Samporna fall in love with the lovely daughter of Datu Bagani which he sent as the emissary to negotiate in his behalf. RAJAH MODA SAMPORNA courted her until they love each other and their relationship became fruitful and they decided to get a primitive heritage of marriage and live together as husband and wife at the Kalambagohan District and finally transferred their residence to BAAGAS PATAG wherein their offspring multiplied and formed their respective community and was known and identified as; DATU SAMPORNA, DATU BAGTING, DATU ALCOBOL, DATU BALICAOL AND DATU MOLAWAN communities. All these primitives’ names still exist in Barangay Patag, Molawan St., at 6th Division, Zone 12. The BAGTING family was residing at Carmen and Patag and the BALICAOL family was residing at Zone 9, this barangay. The recognition of Rajah Moda Samporna’s Victory being the unopposed leader of the Tribal Mongolian Group of Muslim ancestry was immediately given a meaning, that his exploration aim with the objective to govern the followers of Datu Bagani did not gain, but earned an empty victory and also suffered a completed defeat due to Rajah Moda Samporna’s marriage to the lovely daughter of Datu Bagani, the Ruler ofbukidnon at that time. After their native heritage marriage, an “EXODOS” was planned by the followers of Rajah Moda Samporna to leave the District of BAAGAS PATAG for their return to their origin in the Southern part of Mindanao and immediately gave a colorful and significant meaning to the District of Baagas Patag“KAAYAHAN” which means in the Mongolian Muslim dialect as a word of SHAME because they are ashamed that their ancestry are already controlled and governed by Datu Bagani and his men in Bukidnon. The word “KAAYAHAN” was then further translated by the natives of Bukidnon as KAGAYHAAN also means shame, but when the Spanish colonizers arrived and reached their place, the change the name KAGAYHAAN to CAGAYAN DE ORO after the Spaniards found plenty of small gold stones along the river banks which was carried away by the river current. Then the renaissance of the new generations came which resulted to discover about the physical world. It was at this time that the European explorers found sea route to Asia and lands unknown to them in the Western Hemisphere. In the voyage of Christopher Columbus, the New World changed the popular ideas about Geography. While Ferdinand Magellan sailed around the World and found a new route to India through the Cape of Good Hope which they found new discoveries and growth of independent that encouraged them and developed new scientific ideas and methods, but sad to say that most of our people today still followed the medieval ideas. Now Barangay Patag exists, it is located on a hilly terrain, 3 kilometers from the city proper. In year 1937, In the heart of Barangay Patag, a Military Home Base or working Head of CAMP EVANGELISTA, in honor of the first Philippine Army, 4th Infantry Division, General Edilberto Evangelista and under his leadership, the Philippine Air Force installed the FIRST AIR STRIP (PHILIPPINE ARMY TRAINING AERONAUTIC GROUND now called (PATAG), wherein Barangay Patag was born and now presently called the HOME OF THE PROUD SOLDIER’S. That is why majority of the people residing this Barangay were working in the Military Service, others are civilian personnel of the Camp Evangelista, 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army and majority of the constituents of this barangay are beneficiaries of the military. “Without the Philippine Army Camp we don’t have the name of a BARANGAY PATAG”
