DOST Northern Mindanao celebrates another milestone in strengthening the region’s startup and innovation ecosystem as its startup focal persons successfully completed the OneTBI Training Program and received the Best International Immersion Action Plan Award during the Graduation and Culmination Program held on September 22, 2026, at DOST-MIRDC in Taguig City.

The Region X team was composed of startup focal persons from the Regional Office and the five Provincial S&T Offices:
- Jon Michael A. Semilla – DOST Northern Mindanao Regional Office
- Dorina Marie E. Ytang – DOST Lanao del Norte
- Ella B. Nadela – DOST Misamis Occidental
- Vench Clark C. Mier – DOST Bukidnon
- John Paul R. Tumala – DOST Misamis Oriental
- Jason Jay C. Dalman – DOST Camiguin

Through the program, the team developed practical ways to help more startups in Northern Mindanao grow—from finding promising founders and ideas, to connecting them with TBIs, mentors, facilities, funding, markets, and other support they need.

The Best International Immersion Action Plan Award recognized the team’s plan for applying lessons from the international immersion of Dorina Marie E. Ytang in Vietnam and Ella B. Nadela in Taiwan, translating these learnings into practical startup initiatives for the region.

Congratulations to our DOST NorMin startup focal persons for successfully completing the program and bringing home this recognition! 🎉👏

Health research takes center stage in Iligan City as researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals, academe, students, and other stakeholders from across Northern Mindanao come together for the 9th Regional Health Research Conference.

With this year’s theme, “Bridging Regional Health Challenges through Transdisciplinary Research,” the conference brings together different disciplines and perspectives to better understand the health challenges faced by our communities, and find solutions that are grounded in local realities.

But why does health research matter to the public? Because research can become better healthcare, more responsive health programs, informed policies, and practical solutions that improve everyday lives. By sharing evidence, exchanging ideas, and connecting researchers with decision-makers and communities, discoveries can move beyond laboratories and conference halls and become actions that benefit Filipinos.

From research presentations and poster competitions to policy pitches, discussions, and science communication, Day 1 highlights how knowledge can be transformed into action, and research can be transformed into better health outcomes for Northern Mindanao.

The ST&I Foresight and Pagtanaw 2050 training for Mindanao Cluster A, hosted by DOST Northern Mindanao kicked off on October 5 in Dahilayan, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, gathering leaders and managers from DOST Regions 9, 10 and from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The activity, facilitated by the DOST Office of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Transfer, Communications Commercialization will run until October 9, 2026.

PAGTANAW 2050 provides a long-term foresight framework for Philippine science, technology, and innovation, helping DOST anticipate emerging opportunities and challenges and strengthen strategic planning and decision-making toward a progressive, archipelagic, and maritime nation.

Through the training, participants are being equipped with practical foresight tools and methodologies that they can bring home and cascade in their respective regions, building regional capability to think beyond what is immediate and prepare for what comes next.

Because the future is not simply something we wait for. It is something we prepare for today.

Innovation should begin with the needs of people, and ultimately, reach the hands of the people who need it most.

At the 9th Regional Health Research Conference, Ms. Gerrylou Sweet M. Pia, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST Lanao del Norte, emphasized the importance of making health research responsive to the real challenges experienced by communities.

By listening to people, applying science and research, and working together, we can turn evidence into solutions and innovations that create meaningful impact where it matters most.

The message was delivered on behalf of DOST Regional Director and NORMINCOHRD Vice-Chair Dr. Mark Lemuel L. Garcia during the Regional Health Research Conference held today in Iligan City.
