The digital stage of the DigiHaz Summit, held online via Zoom on 24 September 2025, showcased groundbreaking research from the Civil Engineering Department and the SD Xavier University Service Learning Program . Organized by the Malaysian partners of the SCOPE-HE project comprising researchers from Malaysia, Cambodia, Greece, Spain and the Philippines, the event brought together students, professionals, researchers, and scholars in disaster management. It featured research presentations, and a workshop on digital transformation for natural hazards, showcasing how innovative mapping technologies and smart solutions are reshaping our understanding and response to disasters.

The Mindanao River Basin Landscape Risk Assessment is a comprehensive study that goes beyond mere data to tell a compelling story of communities grappling with environmental and socio-political challenges while striving for resilience. Through extensive community engagement and transect walks, the study provides a clear picture of the on-the-ground issues.

This initiative is a collaborative effort of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, in partnership with the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and the ACCESS consortium (CARE and ACCORD).

In a significant move to strengthen disaster risk reduction (DRR) and build resilient communities, Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, in partnership with the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and the ACCESS consortium (CARE and ACCORD), is leading initiatives to protect the Mindanao River Basin. Spearheaded by Project Leader and Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering, EnP/Engr Jefferson R Vallente Jr, these efforts are setting a new standard for proactive disaster preparedness in the region.

𝗔𝗗𝗠𝗨, 𝗫𝗨 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

Amid recurring floods and other disasters facing the country, it has become more pronounced and urgent that resilience is everyone’s business. Building resilient systems and communities at different levels of engagements has become an imperative. These stories, often left untold, need to be shared and recognized.

Dr Emma Porio of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and Engr Dexter Lo of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) document some of these stories of resilience across the country. Porio and Lo serve as members of the Field Validation Committee for the Philippine Resilience Awards, an initiative led by the Climate Change Commission of the Philippine Government, where they help identify and document inspiring examples of resilience in action.

This call urges us to go beyond outrage, to reflect, and to act for truth, justice, and the common good. We seek to nurture citizens and leaders who will choose integrity over corruption. Shared during the Season of Creation (1 Sept – 4 Oct), this statement embodies three Laudato Si’ Goals—Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, and Community Resilience and Empowerment—reminding us that fighting corruption is also caring for creation and protecting lives.
