The Research Institute for Mindanao Culture (RIMCU), in partnership with the Xavier University's Social Development Office, is now accepting applications for Graduate Student Project Assistants (GSPA) under the CiCADD (Climate Change Adaptation, Displacement, and Dispossession) global project.

CiCADD advances science-based work in Geomatics, Disaster Risk Reduction, and Climate Change Adaptation, supporting communities through research, collaboration, and innovation. Selected assistants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful research and development work alongside faculty, staff, and partner institutions.

• GSPA2 – Social and Economic Component
• GSPA3 – Land Use Change Component + Geomatics

𝐗𝐔 𝐌𝐀𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐉𝐑𝐒, 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝟓,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐣𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐲 🌱🌎

In partnership with the Philippine Jesuit Refugee Service, the Xavier University - McKeough Advancement for Environment, Resilience, and Sustainability Center successfully planted mangrove seedings during their first mangrove planting last 9 and 10 April 2026 in Kinoguitan and Balingasag.

A total of 5,000 mangrove seedlings were successfully planted in Buko, Kinoguitan and Binitinan, Balingasag, with species planted including bakhaw lalaki (Rhizophora apiculata), pagatpat puti (Sonneratia alba), and piapi (Avicennia rumphiana). Alongside PJRS and MAERS Center, representatives from the Xavier University Biophilic Society, the Sangguniang Kabataan of Binitinan and Balingasag, and the Balingasag Philippine National Police joined in on the initiative.

𝗫𝗨 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝘄𝗸𝘀𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗮 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Hatchlings of the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) nests were documented at the Xavier University (XU) Marine Station in Solana, Jasaan. On 25 January 2026, the Hawksbill sea turtle was nesting at the marine station. To ensure the nest remained safe from potential predators, a protective net was carefully placed around the perimeter.

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan has opened a meaningful avenue to reach and support communities most affected by the ongoing crisis through XU BIYAHEnihan: Emergency Relief Assistance for Public Transport Drivers and Vulnerable Families. Spearheaded by the Social Involvement and Advocacy Program (SIAP) under the XU Social Development Cluster, the initiative has reached families and public transport drivers across different communities and sectors in Cagayan de Oro City. This was made possible through the support of Tanging Yaman Foundation, Inc, and other generous donors.

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan signed separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with Del Monte Philippines, Inc. (DMPI) and the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (CEPALCO) on Tuesday, 25 March 2026, formalizing industry partnerships for a government-funded research project that aims to develop a smart decision support system for converting the city’s municipal solid waste into electricity.

On 16 March 2026, the Xavier University Little Theater became more than a venue—it became a space of dialogue and discernment. In the spirit of the Social Development Week 2026, the forum “Barugan: Konsensiya ug Integridad” A Multi-stakeholder Anti-Corruption Forum gathered students, educators, civil society actors, and governance advocates to confront a pressing question: How do we respond—personally and collectively—to the enduring challenge of corruption?

Organized by the Social Development Cluster through its Social Involvement and Advocacy Program (SIAP) and the XU Center for Legal Assistance (XUCLA), the forum carried the theme “Pagtubag sa Hagit sa Panahon: Nurturing Legacies and Serving Communities.” It framed corruption not merely as a legal or administrative issue, but as a moral crisis that erodes human dignity, distorts justice, and weakens democratic life.
