DOST’s P2.7-M water treatment system to benefit jail facilities in Camarines Norte

LEGAZPI CITY – Two facilities of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Camarines Norte will receive water treatment systems under a PHP2.7 million project through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Bicol Local Grants-in-Aid program.

BJMP-Bicol information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said the project aims to improve access to safe drinking water for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and jail personnel.

“The site was already visited, and the partnership was formalized through a memorandum of agreement signed by DOST-(Bicol) Regional Director Rommel Serrano and BJMP-Bicol Regional Director JSSupt. Jose Gemelo Taol early this October. The three-year initiative, known as Project Aqua, will provide a water treatment system, a drinking water station, and a backup generator for the Labo District Jail and Daet District Jail Annex,” Anglo said in an interview Friday evening.

He said the initiative seeks to apply science and technology to address basic needs in correctional facilities and improve the living and working conditions of PDLs and jail personnel.

“Once operational, the systems are expected to provide a more reliable source of drinking water for both facilities,” he added.

A total of 489 PDLs from the two facilities – 236 in Labo District Jail and 253 at the Daet District Jail Annex – as well as jail personnel will benefit from the project.

Project Aqua is part of the government’s efforts to improve access to essential services in correctional facilities through collaboration among national agencies and local government units.

The provincial government of Camarines Norte has committed an additional PHP300,000 to construct a permanent structure to house and protect the equipment. (PNA)

I've been harping about Demand Side Management in Water and Electricity usage for years but thought it was falling on deaf ears. Happy to note there are some out there who believe it is the way to go rather than endlessly putting up more power plants or laying out more pipelines, digging artesian wells and in general increasing supply without paying attention on how it's used.
