Ciudad de Zamboanga where I spent my salad days before moving to Cagayan de Oro 45 years ago.

🇵🇭 In one corner of the southern Philippines, people still greet each other in a language that sounds like Spanish wrapped in island sunshine. 🌞

Chavacano is a Spanish based creole spoken mainly in Zamboanga City, and it is one of the oldest and last surviving Spanish creoles in the world. Born from centuries of contact between Spanish colonizers, soldiers, traders, and local communities, it blends Spanish vocabulary with the grammar and rhythm of Philippine languages. While Spanish itself almost entirely faded from the islands after the colonial era, Chavacano lived on in the streets, markets, and homes of Zamboanga, spoken today by hundreds of thousands of people who call it their mother tongue. 🚤

In a country where so many traces of the past were erased or forgotten, Chavacano is a living, breathing relic that ordinary people kept alive simply by speaking it every day. It is proof that culture survives most powerfully not in museums but in everyday conversation. There is something beautiful about a language that refused to disappear. I would love to know how it sounds to ears hearing it for the first time. 🇵🇭

CITY CHARTER DAY VIGNETTE: As early as 10 January 1899, the name Cagayan de Oro (albeit spelled as Kagayan de Oro) was already publicly documented in the poem PINAHANONGOD (Dedication) written by Toribio Chaves y Roa (also known as Kapitan Bibo), the first Municipal Presidente (Mayor) of Cagayan de Misamis (now Cagayan de Oro). It serves as a paean to the freedom Filipinos obtained after 333 years of Spanish colonial rule.

The poem was performed by Pedro Akut y Gaerlan from a window of the Casa Real to commemorate the first hoisting of the new Philippine flag in Cagayan celebrating the declaration of Philippine Independance in in a two-day fiesta known as La Fiesta Nacional.

PINAHANONGOD
Pinaagi ni Toribio Chaves y Roa

Toguti ako mga igsoon
Sa pagsaysay sa mahal nga hinungdan
Ning hingpit tang guikalipayan
Nahitabo ning matamis nga panahon.

Walay katakus makig atubang,
Ning katilingban nga talahuron,
Misogut kay may katungdanan,
Sa bisan kinsang Pilipinhon.

Tolo ka gatus ka tuig kapin,
Ang pagulipon kanato sa mga Katsila,
Giugbok, gipakayab ug giibilin,
Ang ilang kaugalingon Bandila.

Mga Pilipinhon, kitang tanan,
Sa Luzon, Visayas ug Mindanao,
Nagantus sa daugdaug ug kalabhaan,
Sa way katarungan ang dugo ning banao.

Hiniktan, tiil, kamot ug hunahuna,
Wa kitay pamuot nga kaugalingon
Mga katarungan ta dili pag tagdon
Sa mga mapintas nga mga Katsila.

Guidid-an sa pagtinu-aw sa salabutan,
Daw mga mananap sa kasolopan,
Dili ipatultol sa hawang dalan,
Agi-anan ngadto sa Kagawasan.

Ang mangahas sa pakiglantugi,
Isipon dayon nga masinuklon,
Kon dili sa kalabuso lu-ogon,
Putlan sa matam-is nga kinabuhi.

Miawas ug milapay na sa batakan,
Ang pagantus ug taas nga pailub,
Kay ang Salabutan ni Dr. Rizal gi-iwagan,
Sa sundang ug bangkaw ang yuta gi-ilog.

Bonifacio, Aguinaldo, ug kadaghanan,
Sa mga malupigon mingdasmag,
Way sapayan sa daghan nga nangapukan,
Ug ang makauulawng talikala gitadtad.

Karon kita makahiplos na gayud,
Sa hikot sa pagkaulipon,
Wa nay libug sa lihok nga ugalingon,
Aron maka angay sa ubang mga nasud.

Mga igsoon mao kini ang hinungdan,
Sa lunsay ta karong gikalipay,
Ang Bandila sa hinandom kaugalingnan,
Mikayab na gayud sa atong kalangitan.

Matahom larawan sa nasud nga Pilipinhon,
Paglaban kaniya unungan ta sa kamatavon,
Nagdalag bulok, puti, azul ug pulahon,
Usa ka adlaw ug tolo ka bitoon.

Isaad ta nga aron kanunay siya buhi,
Kadungganan sa Inahang Pilipinas,
Ang mangahas kaniya pagtampalas,
Usikan ta sa atong mga kinabuhi.

Buot ako moadto molupad,
Sa labing taas sa kalangitan,
Manigingon sa kalanggaman,
Nga naga tagamtam sa kagawasan.

Oh! Kagayan, Kagayan de Oro,
Itagsip sa inyong panumduman,
Kining nueve ug dies sa Enero,
Ning malipayon katuigan.

Mil ocho cientos noventa y nueve,
Ang Pangilin sa malipayon pagsaulog,
Gitabu nga wa pa sugod moagi,
Pagyokbo sa hinalangpon Nasud.

Mg carrosa nga caron igalibut,
Nagadala sa buhing mga tima-an,
Aron ikamantala sa tibook nga lungsod,
Nga ang Filipinas mao pa mabuahan.

Makita to nang maong karrosa,
Ang hinalangpanon tang bandila,
Kinuptan sa usa ka maambung dalaga,
Tinumban ang na putolputol nga talikala.

Ang dalaga maoy buhing larawan,
Sa hinigugmang yutang natawhan,
Yutang atong tanan na himugsoan,
Busa sa mga tabunon maoy inahan.

Ang adlaw nagapahayag sa iyang dan-ag,
Nga sa Pilipinas karon na miabut,
Ang kanunay ginapaabut,
Nga mao ang Independencia ug Libertad.

Ang hinungdan sa tolo ka bitoon,
Mao ang mga pulo nato nga nagakauyon,
Mindanao, Kabisay-an ug Luzon,
Timaan nga kitang tanan managsoon.

Ang bata nga babaye nagdala purong laurel,
Timaan sa Kadau-gan,
Kay kitang tanan karon naluwas na,
Ug naga tagamtam sa kabulahanan.

Ang bata nga lalaki maoy larawan,
Ingon kanato nga tabunon tawo,
Ug kanang gamhanan sundang
Mao ang kalisangan sa mga puting sundalo.

Igo na una ang pagsugilanon,
Sa kahulugan ning fiesta
Nasugyot kining kabubuton,
Sa pagsing-git "Viva, Viva."

The attached photo is part of the typewritten draft of the poem where the word "Kagayan de Oro" is prominently mentioned in the 15th of the 24-stanza poem. This was transcribed from the original handwritten manuscript of Filomeno M. Bautista Sr. of his "The Philippine Revolution in Misamis Province 1900-1901" better known as the Bautista Manuscript. This copy was donated to the City Museum of Cagayan de Oro and Heritage Studies Center by Mrs. Bautista-Yañez. (photo courtesy of J.C. Salon)

Filomeno M. Bautista, Sr., (right) author of Glimpses of Mindanao-The Land of Promise & The Bautista Manuscript on the Philippine Revolution in Misamis Province, 1900-1901, named his establishment the Cagayan de Oro Hotel in 1938 (left), predating the City of Cagayan de Oro by 12 years. Antonio J. Montalvan II, a Kagay-anon columnist, social anthropologist, university professor and heritage activist, also cites documents in the Archivo de la Unibersidad de Santo Tomas (AUST) where students from then Cagayan de Misamis enrolled in the Ateneo de Manila and the UST from the1890s listed their place of origin as “Cagayan de Oro.”

Ramoncito Cruz, Editor-in-Chief of CAGAYAN DE ORO 400 YEARS by Rufus B. Rodriguez relates how the creative team behind the multi-awarded Media Wise Communications / MUSE Books realized the vision of a dream four decades and some in the making

When people think of Cagayan de Oro, they often think of the phrase we carry so proudly: “The City of Golden Friendship.”  But as an editorial team, when we began digging into the very bones of this project, we asked ourselves: What lies beneath that golden warmth? What is the true bedrock of t...

At long last, the definitive Cagayan de Oro Coffee Table Book Kagay-anons can finally call their own! MABUHAY!!!

125 Years later, few Kagay-anons know much about the Philippine Revolution when citizens faced off against a global superpower in the making. Even this late in the day, new details about that heroic stand are being uncovered, and we share some of them here for the benefit of our younger generations as well as the not-so-young who have not come across them before.
Enjoy history, honor and respect your forebears! Many gave the ultimate sacrifice that we may enjoy the right to live our lives the way we want them today.

Very few Kagay-anons today are aware that Cagayan de Oro (then known as Cagayan de Misamis), was the primary center of resistance in Mindanao to the American invasion of the Philippines during the Philippine-American War. Based on historical records, the Northern Mindanao Resistance (primarily cente...
