National Heroes Day is not only about looking back at the sacrifices of the great men and women in our history. It is also a reminder that we can carry their legacy forward in our own simple ways by helping others, standing up for what is right, and serving our communities with love and compassion.

Happy National Heroes Day! 🇵🇭

For this year's Heritage Day, we highlight the University Main (Old) Library.

What started as a single room in St Joseph’s Hall during the 1950s grew into the Main Library we know today. Built through the United States War-Damage Claims funds and guided by the vision of Fr James McMahon SJ, the three-story structure was solemnly blessed on 15 August 1964. Today, it still holds a piece of our history in a pre-war molave wood crucifix gifted by Archbishop James TG Hayes, SJ that rests in its original third-floor location.

Every visit tells a story. What's yours?

For this year's Heritage Day, we highlight the University Main (Old) Library.

What started as a single room in St Joseph’s Hall during the 1950s grew into the Main Library we know today. Built through the United States War-Damage Claims funds during the term of then Xavier University President Fr James McMahon, SJ, the three-story structure was solemnly blessed on 15 August 1964.

In 2022, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) declared the Main Library as one of the eight buildings included in the Xavier Ateneo Historical Preservation Zone.

Today, it continues to hold pieces of our history, including a pre-war molave wood crucifix gifted by Archbishop James T. G. Hayes, SJ, which remains in its original location on the third floor.

Every visit tells a story. What’s yours?

As we celebrate Xavier Ateneo Heritage Day today, August 27, 2026, let us pause and reflect on 93 years of Xavier University’s rich heritage as the first university in Mindanao and the first Jesuit university in the Philippines. May this day remind us of the pioneering spirit of our founders, the legacy entrusted to us, and our shared mission to continue making a meaningful difference in the communities we serve. 💙
