Merly Suday: The Inspiring Young Female Leader of Bukidnon

For years, the vision of a thriving, self-sustaining community lived quietly in the hearts of the members of the Inhandig Tribal Multi-Purpose Cooperative (ITMPC) in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. It was a dream shaped by resilience, nurtured by tradition, and carried forward by leaders who refused to let it fade.

At the center of that vision stands Merly O. Suday, a woman whose leadership has helped turn hope into something tangible.

As the General Manager of ITMPC, Merly has long been a steady force within her community—guiding, organizing, and believing in the potential of her fellow Indigenous Peoples. Her work is rooted not only in management but in a deep understanding of what her community truly needs: opportunities that honor their identity while opening doors for growth.

When she speaks about the Mindanao Inclusive Agriculture Development Project (MIADP), her words carry both gratitude and conviction. She describes it simply, yet profoundly—as an “answered prayer.”

For Merly and the members of ITMPC, the approval of their coffee enterprise subproject was more than just a milestone, as it was the realization of a long-held aspiration.

Behind that achievement lies a story of patience and persistence. For years, the cooperative envisioned a sustainable livelihood anchored in coffee production—an industry that aligns with their land, their skills, and their cultural connection to agriculture. Yet like many Indigenous communities, they faced barriers that made it difficult to move from vision to reality. Limited access to resources, infrastructure, and institutional support often kept their goals just out of reach.

Through MIADP, that changed.

The enterprise subproject for their coffee product signaled recognition of their capability, validation of efforts, and most importantly, a pathway toward economic empowerment. For Merly, it affirmed what she had always believed: that given the right support, their community could flourish on its own terms.

Her testimony resonates because it is grounded in truth. It reflects the quiet struggles endured over the years, as well as the collective strength that carried them forward. In her voice is a sense of fulfillment—not just as a leader, but as someone who has witnessed firsthand how dreams, when supported, can take root and grow.

With the coffee enterprise now in motion, she continues to guide ITMPC with the same dedication, ensuring that the project translates into real and lasting benefits for her community.

Merly O. Suday’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of meaningful partnerships. It is about a leader who held onto a vision long enough to see it realized—and who now stands ready to nurture it into something even greater.

Gipahigayon sa Northern Mindanao Agricultural Crops and Livestock Research Complex (NMACLRC), ang maong kalihokan naghatag og teknikal nga kahibalo sa mga engineer ug kawani sa DA-RFO 10, uban sa mga representante gikan sa Probinsya sa Bukidnon, mga dakbayan sa Malaybalay, Valencia, ug Gingoog, ug mga lungsod sa Impasug-ong ug Malitbog, gamit ang mga siyentipikanhong pamaagi sa pagpangita ug pag-assess sa groundwater.

Matod ni RPCO 10 Component 2 Unit Head Engr. Junel W. Ablanque, ang pagpalig-on sa kahanas sa mga engineer importante kaayo sa paghimo og kasaligang sistema sa tubig. Kini gisuportahan usab ni Engr. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Human sa inisyal nga paglunsad niini, malampusong gitapos sa Department of Agriculture – Mindanao Inclusive Agriculture Development Project (DA-MIADP) Regional Project Coordination Office 10 (RPCO 10) ang ikaduhang hugna sa Basic News Writing and Photography Workshop dinhi kaniadtong Marso 17–20, 2026. Tumong sa upat ka adlaw nga pagbansay ang pagpalapad sa pag-promotar sa proyekto pinaagi sa pagtudlo sa nagkalain-laing stakeholders aron madokumento ang mga istorya sa kalamboan sa agrikultura sa mga partner nga Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICC).

Gitigom sa maong workshop ang mga information officers nga naggumikan pa sa mga lokal nga mga panggamhanan sa Malitbog ug Valencia City, uban sa mga miyembro ug boluntaryo gikan sa Kalanawan, Daraghuyan, ug Bukidnon-Tagoloanon Ancestral Domains. Pinaagi sa paghatag og gahum sa mga partisipante nga anaa mismo nagpuyo sulod niining mga komunidad, gipaniguro sa proyekto nga ang mga lokal nga istorya sa kalampusan makuha uban ang teknikal nga katukma ug integridad sa kultura.

Gipangunahan ni Philippine Rural Development Project 10 (PRDP-10) InfoAce Officer Isa Agawin ang mga sesyon sa pagsulat og balita, nga nagtutok sa mga sukaranan sa journalism ug ang paghimo og epektibo nga mga lead. Usa ka sentro nga bahin sa pagbansay nagtuki sa Media and Information Literacy kon MIL, diin nakakat-on ang mga partisipante sa paglawig sa digital nga impormasyon. Naghatag si Agawin og mga praktikal nga pamaagi sa pag-ila sa sayop nga impormasyon ug pag-ila sa balita nga sinulat sa tawo nga gitandi sa mga hinimo gamit ang Artificial Intelligence kon AI.

Gidugangan kini ni story-weaver Shania Yulo, nga nagdumala sa lawom nga pagtuki bahin sa ethical photography ug ang kamahinungdanon sa pagmintinar sa dignidad sa mga subject. Gigiyahan ni Yulo ang mga partisipante sa paghimo og madanihon nga digital captions aron masiguro nga ang mga istorya sa komunidad epektibong mamatikdan sa social media platforms.

Sa pagbalik niining mga communicators sa ilang tagsa-tagsa ka mga lungsod ug ancestral domains, bitbit nila ang mas gipahait nga kahimanan alang sa pagpaambit og impormasyon. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – To strengthen the communication capacity of its personnel and highlight the success stories of farmers and agricultural communities, the Department of Agriculture – Mindanao Inclusive Agriculture Development Project Regional Project Coordination Office (DA-MIADP RPCO 10) conducted a four-day Basic News Writing and Photography Workshop, from March 10-13, here.

The workshop gathered participants from various offices and programs of DA-Regional Field Office 10 (RFO-10) to learn the essentials of newswriting, including crafting strong leads, applying the inverted pyramid structure, and writing accurate reports from the field.

Participants practiced transforming routine activity documentation into meaningful developmental stories. These narratives highlight the people and communities impacted by the DA-RFO 10’s interventions and programs.

The activity also emphasized the power of visual storytelling. During the photography sessions, participants explored composition techniques—such as the rule of thirds, perspective, contrast, framing, and the use of light—to produce impactful images that complement their written stories.

For many, the writing exercises and critiquing sessions provided vital opportunities to improve. Each group received feedback to help them package a full development story.

["As an employee with no experience in news writing, this is a great opportunity to learn how to create an article that has impact, purpose, and intention, so that we can share it with the wider public through news writing and photography"].

One of the speakers, Prof. Rechelle T. Barraquias from the Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan Development Communication Department, highlighted the importance of creating development stories that speak volumes about the impact of programs or projects on their beneficiaries.

By the end of the activity, the participants left with strengthened communication skills. As new storytellers, they now carry the technical expertise to effectively capture and share stories from the field, ensuring that the successes of farmers and agricultural communities reach a wider audience. Gipahigayon ang usa ka Partners’ Roundtable Discussion (RTD) aron sutaon ang hiniusang sistema sa suporta alang sa Coffee Consolidation, Processing, and Marketing enterprise nga gidumala sa Inhandig Tribal Multi-Purpose Cooperative-ITMPC. Kini nga dayalogo naghiusa sa Probinsyal nga Panggamhanan sa Bukidnon, City Government of Malaybalay, ug nagkalain-laing banner programs sa DA-RFO X, uban usab ang National Commission on Indigenous Peoples - Region 10 (NCIP-10), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), ug DOST Bukidnon. Apil usab sa maong pundok ang Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority ug Orient Integrated Development Consultants Inc. Ang mission team sa World Bank, uban nila ni Senior Enterprise Development Specialist Gomer Tumbali, Senior Social Development Specialist Maria Loreto Padua, Social Development Specialist Anabelle Vitti Valenzuela, ug Operations Analyst Vincent Abrigo, mihatag og pasidungog sa RPCO ug Project Support Office alang sa ilang epektibong pagpatuman. Namarkahan usab nila ang kahanas sa proyekto sa pagpahigayon og field validations ug ang paghatag og kusog sa lokal nga komunidad pinaagi sa mabulawanong pakiglambigit sa mga stakeholders.
Nahuman ang maong kalihokan pinaagi sa pagpirma sa Pledge of Commitment tali sa mga lokal nga panggamhanan, development agencies, Indigenous Political Structure (IPS), ug ang ITMPC sa Daraghuyan Ancestral Domain. Kini nga kasabutan nagpalig-on sa hiniusang responsibilidad alang sa inklusibong paglambo sa negosyo. Gipadayag sa task team nga ang ITMPC coffee enterprise nagsilbing ehemplo kung giunsa ang panaghiusa sa mga institusyon makahimo sa mga development investments ngadto sa malampusong negosyo nga gidumala mismo sa komunidad alang sa panginabuhian sa mga partner ICC/IPs.

Nagpasalamat si DA-MIADP RPCO 10 Deputy Project Director Lana May S. Racines sa World Bank sa pag-ila sa mga kalampusan sa rehiyon. Iyang gipasabot nga ang kalampusan sa proyekto iya sa mga ICC/IPs, ug dugang niya, bisan wala na ang DA-MIADP, kinahanglan nga makabarog ug molambo sila sa ilang kaugalingon. Gipasiugdahan usab niya nga ang lig-on nga inter-agency convergence sa Northern Mindanao mahinungdanon kaayo sa kalampusan sa MIADP ug nanawagan siya sa mga partners nga sundon kini nga convergence model sa uban pang ancestral domains sa rehiyon aron mapadako pa ang suporta alang sa mga komunidad sa mga IPs.

MALAYBALAY CITY, BUKIDNON — Gipakita sa Daraghuyan Ancestral Domain ang kalig-on sa ilang kaugalingong pagdumala ug lumadnong pag-negosyo atol sa bag-ohay lang nahuman nga field visit alang sa ika-limang World Bank Implementation Support Mission sa MIADP niadtong Pebrero 23, 2026.

Ang maong pagbisita nag-sentro sa pagsusi sa World Bank task team sa Farm-to-Market Road (FMR) sa Daraghuyan AD ug ang pagdumala sa Inhandig Tribal Multi-Purpose Cooperative-ITMPC, ilabi na ang ilang negosyo sa Coffee Consolidation, Processing, and Marketing. Ubos sa pagpangulo ni Bae Inatlawan Adelina D. Tarino ug sa Indigenous Political Structure (IPS), gipakita sa komunidad sa Daraghuyan kung giunsa nila malampusong napausbaw ang ilang panginabuhian sa agrikultura samtang nagpabiling lig-on sa ilang kultura.

Gisugdan ang pagbisita pinaagi sa usa ka maabi-abihong pagdawat, diin gihangop sila pinaagi sa mga kultural nga pasundayag ug sa lamian nga kape. Isip pagtahod sa ilang sagradong tradisyon, gisugdan ang kalihukan pinaagi sa ritwal nga Pamalas. Kini nga tradisyonal nga seremonya nagsilbi nga pagpa-ila sa mga bisita ngadto sa mga espiritu sa yutang kabilin, pagpangayo og panalangin alang sa maong misyon, ug pagsiguro nga ang matag lakang paingon sa kalamboan magpabilin nga nahiuyon sa ilang kultura.

Human sa ritwal, gisusi sa World Bank task team ang mga dapit sa produksyon sa kape sa ITMPC ug nakig-istorya mahitungod sa pagpadayon sa maong negosyo. Si ITMPC General Manager Merly O. Suday, uban sa mga opisyales sa kooperatiba, nagpakita sa aktwal nga operasyon sa ilang pagproseso. Ilang gihatagan og gibug-aton kung unsa ka mahinungdanon ang bag-ong FMR sa ilang mga tinguha, nga nagpamatuod nga ang kalamboan mas mabungahon kung kini nagtahud ug nagsuporta sa panginabuhian sa komunidad.

Gidayeg ni Maria Theresa G. Quiñones, ang World Bank Task Team Leader ug Senior Rural Development Specialist, ang mga kalamposang nakab-ot pinaagi sa hiniusang paningkamot sa Daraghuyan. Matod pa ni Quiñones, “Natutuwa po kami na kayo po ay nangunguna kasi meron na po tayong Coffee enterprise at Farm-to-Market Road. Masasabi po namin na kayo po ay valedictorian at panatiliin ninyo maging valedictorian ng MIADP sa Region 10.”

Gitapos ang misyon pinaagi sa pagdayeg sa Daraghuyan AD sa ilang walay paglubad nga dedikasyon sa pagpalambo sa ekonomiya ug pagpreserba sa kultura. Pinaagi sa paghimo og de-kalidad nga kape samtang nagpabiling matinuoron sa ilang mga tradisyon, ang Daraghuyan AD nagsilbing usa ka makapadasig nga ehemplo sa usa ka komunidad nga naghimo sa ilang negosyo isip tulay ngadto sa usa ka masidlak ug progresibong kaugmaon.
