A milestone for mental health advocacy in Cagayan de Oro City.
For the first time, media practitioners, Mass Communication students, student publications, and content creator were brought together in one event to discuss a shared responsibility: advancing mental health through responsible and compassionate communication. More than an event, this gathering marked the beginning of a stronger partnership between the mental health sector and the media—two powerful forces that shape public understanding, attitudes, and behaviors.
This initiative of the City Social Welfare and Development Department – Psychosocial Unit was made possible through its partnership with the City Information Office under the leadership of Mr. Jade Adecer, whose support helped bring together key stakeholders from the media and communication sectors.
The event was graced by Councilor Des Dahino, representing Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy; Councilor Paolo Gaane, Co-Chair of the City Mental Health Board; Mr. Jade Adecer; and Atty. Venamae Celeste, representing CSWD Department Manager Ms. Anecia Tongson, RSW.
Participants gained valuable insights from Ms. Maria Leorupee V. Raagas-Barros, MA, Professor at Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, who discussed The Role of Media in Mental Health, and Rio Rosal B. Baliling, MA, RPsy, RPm, Head of the Psychosocial Unit, who presented on Mental Health and Well-Being of Media Practitioners.
The strong attendance and positive feedback from media partners made the event even more meaningful. Their presence sends a clear message: the media is listening, willing to learn, and ready to be part of building a community that responds to mental health concerns with understanding rather than stigma.
This is an important first step. Through continued collaboration, we are hopeful that the voice of the media will help amplify messages of hope, encourage help-seeking, and inspire a more compassionate and mentally healthy Cagayan de Oro City.
