A milestone for mental health advocacy in Cagayan de Oro City.

For the first time, media practitioners, Mass Communication students, student publications, and content creator were brought together in one event to discuss a shared responsibility: advancing mental health through responsible and compassionate communication. More than an event, this gathering marked the beginning of a stronger partnership between the mental health sector and the media—two powerful forces that shape public understanding, attitudes, and behaviors.

This initiative of the City Social Welfare and Development Department – Psychosocial Unit was made possible through its partnership with the City Information Office under the leadership of Mr. Jade Adecer, whose support helped bring together key stakeholders from the media and communication sectors.

The event was graced by Councilor Des Dahino, representing Mayor Rolando “Klarex” Uy; Councilor Paolo Gaane, Co-Chair of the City Mental Health Board; Mr. Jade Adecer; and Atty. Venamae Celeste, representing CSWD Department Manager Ms. Anecia Tongson, RSW.

Participants gained valuable insights from Ms. Maria Leorupee V. Raagas-Barros, MA, Professor at Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, who discussed The Role of Media in Mental Health, and Rio Rosal B. Baliling, MA, RPsy, RPm, Head of the Psychosocial Unit, who presented on Mental Health and Well-Being of Media Practitioners.

The strong attendance and positive feedback from media partners made the event even more meaningful. Their presence sends a clear message: the media is listening, willing to learn, and ready to be part of building a community that responds to mental health concerns with understanding rather than stigma.

This is an important first step. Through continued collaboration, we are hopeful that the voice of the media will help amplify messages of hope, encourage help-seeking, and inspire a more compassionate and mentally healthy Cagayan de Oro City.

Faith and mental health can go hand in hand. We affirm the CBCP's call to create communities where compassion, understanding, and hope are present. May we be reminded that seeking support is not a lack of faith, but a courageous step toward healing. 🤍

The CSWD CDO PSYCHOSOCIAL DIVISION was deeply honored to be invited by the Rotary Clubs of Cagayan de Oro for a very meaningful and heartfelt community event held at Lumbia National High School. It was conducted by our own City Psychologist, Ms. Rio Rosal Baliling, RPsy, MA, RPM. The event also covered topics about caring for a child with special needs and how it is a profound act of unconditional love. Despite the unwavering efforts of our caregivers, they also need a safe space to breathe, process, and prioritize their own mental wellness.

The session focused on a topic close to our hearts: " Mental Helath for Parents/Caregivers of Children with Special Needs."

A massive thank you to the Rotary Clubs of Cagayan de Oro for making this beautiful initiative possible and for recognizing the unseen efforts of our parents/caregivers.

Helping children understand and manage their emotions is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.

Parents, teachers, and caregivers play a vital role in teaching self-regulation by creating safe spaces, modeling healthy emotional responses, and guiding children through their feelings with patience and empathy.

Every conversation, every calm response, and every moment of support helps build resilience and emotional confidence that lasts a lifetime.
