CAGWAIT, Surigao del Sur - July 18, 2026 - As part of the month-long celebration of the 52nd Nutrition Month, the Barangay Nutrition Committee (BNC) of Barangay Unidad successfully conducted a Mass Feeding Activity for children aged 0–59 months and pregnant women on July 18, 2026, reaffirming the community's commitment to improving maternal and child nutrition.
The activity was spearheaded by the Barangay Nutrition Committee under the leadership of Barangay Captain Joseph E. In partnership with the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) headed by Municipal Mayor Glenn G. Batiancila, REE, nutrition assistance packages were distributed to beneficiaries. A total of 25 tracked pregnant women each received 5 kilograms of rice to help support their nutritional needs during pregnancy. Meanwhile, 17 identified Nutritionally At-Risk (NAR) children aged 6–59 months received 5 kilograms of rice, milk powder, and 10 packs of NutriPak, providing essential food supplements to help improve their nutritional status.
Aside from the feeding and food distribution, Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Rodney Ben Z. Mantilla, RN conducted an informative nutrition education session on Pinggang Pinoy, emphasizing the importance of consuming a balanced and nutritious diet using the Filipino healthy plate model. He also discussed the significance of the First 1,000 Days of Life, highlighting that proper nutrition from pregnancy until a child reaches two years of age is crucial for optimal growth, brain development, disease prevention, and lifelong health.
The activity served not only as a feeding program but also as an avenue to educate parents and caregivers on adopting healthy dietary practices and ensuring adequate nutrition during the most critical stages of life.
The successful implementation of the activity reflects the strong collaboration between the Barangay Nutrition Committee, the Municipal Nutrition Committee, Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and community volunteers in advancing the goals of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN).
Through initiatives such as this, the Municipality of Cagwait continues to strengthen its commitment to achieving better nutrition outcomes and ensuring that every child and every mother has access to adequate nutrition and a healthier future, in line with the 52nd Nutrition Month celebration and the collective vision of a well-nourished and resilient community.
