Barangay Poblacion, the central barangay of the municipality of Calanasan, marked its centennial anniversary on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with a celebration highlighted by various community activities and a renewed call for unity among its people.
The centennial celebration opened with a parade around the barangay, followed by a commemorative program held at Ambaw Pengan along the Apayao River.
One of the major highlights was the fluvial float parade with the candidates of Dam-ag na Babay iBayag. The floats symbolized the traditional livelihoods of the iBayag people, the early inhabitants of Calanasan, whose way of life has long been centered on fishing, river harvests, and river-based transportation along the Apayao River.
Gracing the celebration were Board Members Hon. Vincent Talattag and Hon. Rosario Labueng Jr., along with Executive Assistant to Vice-Governor Naville K. Taccalan, who emphasized unity as a key to sustained development in Apayao while honoring the contributions of the forefathers of Calanasan.
Vice Mayor Martin Lucero B. Lawat, representing Mayor Shamir M. Bulut, reaffirmed the continued support of the local government to the community in various aspects.
Prior to the main event, the barangay conducted various activities, including inter-purok volleyball and basketball tournaments, a fun run, the sashing and presentation of Dam-ag na Babay iBayag candidates, and socialization among the community members.
Evening activities will include a fashion show, chorale performances, a Zumba showdown, and a hip-hop competition.
Barangay Poblacion traces its roots to the late 19th century when early settlers known as the Calanasanes first lived in Lanatan before moving to the present site. It later became known as Bayag, meaning โlong awaited,โ and was designated as Centro in 1926. Renamed Barangay Poblacion under the 1973 Constitution, it grew into the political and social center of Calanasan, achieving steady progress through infrastructure development, improved services, and strong community unity.
