ON THIS DAY: 86 years ago, Commonwealth Act No. 591 was signed into law, paving the way for the establishment of the Bureau of the Census and Statistics (BCS). 📊🇵🇭
Enacted on 19 August 1940, the law marked an important milestone in the development of the Philippine statistical system by consolidating the government’s statistical activities, including the collection of population, social, and economic data through direct enumeration and sampling.
From then, the country’s statistical system has continued to evolve, with advances in technology, data production, and statistical coordination—all toward one goal: producing timely, relevant, and reliable official statistics that guide policymaking and shape national development.
As we commemorate this milestone, we recognize the generations of statisticians, census workers, researchers, and public servants whose contributions continue to strengthen the country’s statistical system. 🫡

LOOK | PSA holds CRVS Academy Batch 14 for Local Civil Registrars for capacity-building
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) continues to strengthen the country’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system through CRVS Academy Batch 14, which brings together Local Civil Registrars (LCRs) and their staff for learning and capacity-building.
In his message, PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, highlighted the PSA’s various initiatives on CRVS and the critical role of local civil registry offices in improving the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of civil registration services for Filipinos and the public.
The Academy featured various modules on civil registration and vital statistics to equip LCRs with practical knowledge, skills, and opportunities for collaboration.

IN PHOTOS I The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Provincial Statistical Office of Oriental Mindoro continues its commemoration of the 86th Anniversary of Commonwealth Act No. 591 creating the Bureau of the Census and Statistics (BCS).

As part of the celebration, selected employees participated in an engaging “Census Enumerator for a Day” activity. The activity provided a meaningful opportunity to experience the role of census enumerators firsthand while discussing the importance of accurate and reliable census data in governance, policy-making, and development planning.

Through this activity, we are reminded that every household counted, every response recorded, and every piece of data gathered contributes to a clearer picture of our communities and helps guide decisions toward a more responsive and inclusive development.

As we remember this significant chapter in our statistical history, PSA Oriental Mindoro conducted an engaging Stat-Pop-Quiz that served as a meaningful way to reinforce participants' knowledge of Philippine statistics and the history of the statistical system. More than just a friendly competition, it encouraged teamwork, quick thinking, and appreciation of the vital role of statistics in understanding and shaping our nation.

It also highlighted that learning about statistics and its history can be both informative and enjoyable—bringing colleagues together while celebrating the legacy and continuing mission of the PSA. PSA Oriental Mindoro remains committed to upholding its mandate of providing relevant and trustworthy statistics for a better-informed and more empowered Filipino nation.

Ang self-sufficiency ratio ay nagpapakita ng porsyento ng kabuuang suplay ng isang produkto na nagmula sa lokal na produksyon ng bansa, kung saan ang suplay ay binubuo ng lokal na produksyon at mga import, bawas ang mga export.
