The Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Regional Office MIMAROPA joins the nation in celebrating the 𝟒𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤, July 17–23, 2026, with the theme:

𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊: DEPDev Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan underscored the vital role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in accelerating the country's progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the 48th Annual Scientific Meeting of the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) on July 8-9, 2026.

In his keynote address, Balisacan, an Academician under the Social Sciences Division of the NAST PHL, emphasized the need to strengthen the link between STI and policymaking to address the country’s development challenges. He also highlighted the important role of NAST PHL in ensuring that policymaking is informed by science, and that research and innovation are directed toward solving real-world problems faced by communities.

Moreover, the DEPDev chief stressed that the challenge is not simple generate more knowledge, but to translate it into practical solutions, productive enterprises, effective public policies, and better lives for every Filipino.

𝗜𝗖𝗬𝗠𝗜: 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝘂𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗣𝗙𝗔 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Four leading-edge projects from a pool of ten qualifiers advanced to the National Competition of the 2026 Presidential Filipinnovation Awards (PFA). The PFA Luzon Sub-National Competition, which vetted the qualifiers’ credentials, was held at the Sequoia Hotel, Quezon City, on June 18, 2026, and was hosted by the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Regional Office (DRO) MIMAROPA.

Showcasing diverse regional talents and proudly-made Filipino innovations, the four finalists who will represent the Luzon cluster are Saltric Marissa Turbine by PDG Engineering Services (Region III), Semi-Automatic Feed Milling System by Red Gate Farm Supplies (MIMAROPA Region), Compact Easy-to-Operate and Economical Biodiesel Reactor for Benteng Diesel by Capistrano Research and Development on Biotechnology, and Nano Foldable Crutches by A.R.C. Mobility Corporation (both from Region IV-A).

In 2025, the country’s Atlas GNI per capita rose to US$4,850, surpassing the World Bank’s UMIC threshold and moving the Philippines from lower middle-income to upper middle-income status.

The Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) said that this historic milestone is driven by sustained growth, sound macroeconomic management, and long-term structural reforms.

The World Bank confirmed the upgrade in its latest income assessment on Wednesday (July 1), reporting the Philippines’ gross national income (GNI) per capita as $4,850, exceeding the $4,636 UMIC threshold.

The shift was underpinned by steady economic expansion, with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growing by an average of 5.8 percent from 2021 to 2025. Strong performance across all industries raised GNI per capita by 8.5 percent in 2025, lifting the Philippines from the lower-middle into the upper-middle income category.
