HIGH 5! โ TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IN GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT
"Inclusion in Action: Gender Awareness and Team Empowerment on Educators"
A 2-day transformative training sessions on Gender and Development (GAD) Inclusion, where Catangtang Elementary School (CES) teachers engaged in dynamic discussions and hands-on activities to foster inclusive classrooms, last November 28-29, 2024. By strengthening gender awareness and promoting teamwork, this workshop equips educators with the tools to create equitable learning environments, where every CES learnerโs potential is recognized and nurtured, regardless of gender. Also, as per Mr. Eduardo R. Reduta, CES School Head, integrating GAD training with team empowerment, CES teaching personnel as educators can create a ripple effect that reaches beyond the classroom, promoting a culture of inclusivity and respect within the entire educational community. The following topics were discussed sequentially - Understanding Gender and the Law: Overview of R.A. 78777 and R.A. 11313 by Mr. Reduta giving key provisions and salient features of the Safe Spaces Act. Meanwhile, Mrs. Monique P. Ramos talked about how the school address Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) by understanding and learning its impact to their learners and by eliminating these acts through shaping educatorsโ roles and responsibilities on VAWC. Afterwards, Ramos also tackled about the Principles of Inclusive Education and Gender Equality by creating equitable opportunities for all learners.
Mrs. Araceli P. Olivar, Master Teacher I, discussed how Gender Sensitivity in teaching practices is to be promoted. Olivar highlighted the integration of gender-responsive approaches in lesson plans, and has identified gender biases in educational materials. Later on, conducting peer education programs on gender and safety was elaborated, alongside with how to enhance leadership roles to champion anti-VAWC initiatives.
An advocacy campaign for the elimination of VAWC was designed by Mrs. Diancel B. Lleva, as she leave impactful awareness activities during the session. Mr. Jake V. Gutierrez, on the other hand, discussed partnerships to promote gender equality and inclusivity at home and in the community through the engagement of parents, the community, and other stakeholders. Mrs. Lyca M. Arenque, as one of the speakers, also talked about the teaching strategies for diverse learners. Arenque adapted some methods to meet the needs of different genders, ensuring accessiblity for learners with intersecting identities. Mr. Reduta, encouraged the teacher-participants for a team-building activity as he continued his topic for Team Empowerment for a Gender-Responsive School Culture. It strengthen sensitive collaboration among the participants as they finish the said activity.
In summary, this training equipped CES teachers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond to issues of gender inequality and violence, fostering an environment where every learner can thrive and feel safe. They must create a positive ripple effect, influencing not only learners but also the wider community, ensuring that gender equality and the protection of women and children become ingrained in the values and practices of society.
