FIRE HITS CROWDED NEIGHBORHOOD IN PUROK 1, BRGY. DAGUM

May 21, 2026 | Calbayog City

A fire swept through a densely-packed neighborhood in Brgy. Dagum late Thursday afternoon.

According to the Calbayog City Fire Station, firefighters responded to an alarm at around 4:48 PM and immediately proceeded to the scene, which was situated deep within a residential pocket of Purok 1, away from the main road.

As the fire threatened to engulf more structures, a second alarm was raised at around 4:52 PM. Through the efforts of the city's firefighters, the fire was declared under control by 5:37 PM and officially out at approximately 5:58 PM.

Around 27 structures, including residential houses, were reportedly destroyed. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or injuries.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)–Calbayog estimates the property damage at ₱465,000.00. Meanwhile, the number of affected individuals is still being verified

While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, unconfirmed reports suggest it may have been triggered by an overheated cellphone.

May 20, 2026 | Calbayog City

Philippine dancesport luminary Crisaldo “Loloi” Rendon facilitated a dancesport training and coaches accreditation today at the Helmut Kutin Social Hall in the SOS Children’s Village.

The five-day training, which will culminate in a recital on Sunday, May 24, seeks to further develop dancesport at the community level, especially among students and local athletes.

Rendon, a licensed adjudicator of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), currently heads the Philippine Dancesport Federation Inc.

The activity is organized by the Calbayog City Sports Commission in cooperation with the Local Youth Development Office, Tikod Dancesport Team, and the Philippine Dancesport Academy.

The workshop enjoys the support of City Mayor Raymund C. Uy, who has advocated for the series of grassroots sports training programs in the city.

CHRMO CONDUCTS RETIREMENT READINESS SEMINAR

May 20, 2026 | Calbayog City

Local government employees who are eligible for retirement attended a Retirement Readiness Seminar organized by the City Human Resource Management Office (CHRMO) today at the City Engineering Office Conference Hall.

The activity aims to prepare employees for the transition to life after government service.

City Administrator Augusto Magdaraog, who also represented City Mayor Raymund C. Uy, encouraged retiring employees to continue serving the community even after retirement, if possible.

The GSIS pre-retirement benefits and programs were discussed at length by Ms. Zazzie G. Adolfo, Division Chief of FSD, GSIS-Catbalogan.

In the afternoon session, the discussion focused on the Pag-IBIG Fund retirement benefits, as presented by Manager Czarina P. Fabella-Tan and Maria Agatha Fabrigaras Diongon, JD.

According to HRM Officer Ma. Rissa Colico, the retirement seminar is important in preparing government employees for life after public service. “With this activity, we hope to help employees plan and better manage their lives after government service, given the uncertainty that many of them feel.”

RELIEF AND REALITY: CALBAYOG LGU EMPLOYEES START RECEIVING MID-YEAR BONUS ON MAY 15

May 16, 2026 | Calbayog City

Around 900 regular employees of the city government of Calbayog began receiving their mid-year bonus on Friday, May 15.

City Treasurer Ma. Evelyn Obong Junio announced that the mid-year bonuses released through ATM accounts had already been credited, while those to be released through the cashier’s office were still being processed.

One government employee who had already withdrawn his mid-year bonus jokingly posted online: “I don’t think canned sardines taste good today.”

The remark humorously hinted at taking a break from the daily struggle to make ends meet, as canned sardines are often seen as a staple of working-class survival.

For some government employees, the benefit is seen as a reward, which could translate into a new pair of shoes, an electric fan, or a dinner in a fancy restaurant. Others see it as a form of income smoothing, survival money at best.

In some cases, the mid-year bonus vanishes before it even arrives, as loans have already been taken out against it. Given the prevailing culture of debt repayment, the mid-year bonus often serves as a trigger for new loans, to be repaid with the year-end bonus, a vicious financial cycle that weighs heavily on the lives of many ordinary government employees.

Ultimately, the mid-year bonus reflects more than just an added financial benefit for government employees. It brings into focus the contrasting realities of public service compensation, where a single payout can represent both brief relief and long-standing financial strain. For many, it is not simply extra income, but a reminder of the delicate balance between earning, spending, and debt culture in everyday life.
