CALBAYOG YOUTH CHALLENGED TO TURN ENERGY, TECHNOLOGY, AND LEADERSHIP INTO COMMUNITY ACTION
Youth participation, responsible use of technology, and stronger involvement in community affairs took center stage as Calbayog City opened its two-day Linggo ng Kabataan 2026, gathering Sangguniang Kabataan officials, youth organizations, educators, and development partners at the Calbayog City Convention Center on August 15, 2026.
Spearheaded by the SK Federation headed by President Hon. Rolando Grotes Jr., in coordination with the Calbayog City Youth Development Office (CCYDO) led by City Youth Development Officer Abicer L. Doroja, the celebration was conducted alongside the observance of Buwan ng Wika and carried the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” The opening activities included a parade participated in by SK officials and youth organizations, followed by messages and learning sessions designed to examine the different roles young people can take in public service and community development.
In his message of support, DILG Calbayog City Local Government Operations Officer Atty. Begie T. Lucenecio encouraged young Calbayognons to use the celebration as an opportunity to examine both their present circumstances and the contribution they are capable of making. “This event helps us ponder on where we are, what you can do, and what you can become,” he said.
Atty. Lucenecio also discussed the growing influence of artificial intelligence and the opportunity for technology to work alongside the energy, creativity, and initiative of the youth. He cautioned, however, against complete dependence on technology, stressing that leadership still requires judgment, responsibility, and meaningful human participation. His message likewise challenged the youth to consider their role in addressing violence and other concerns affecting communities, and to recognize that their participation extends beyond youth activities toward the broader work of local development.
The two-day celebration provided a wider learning platform through discussions led by speakers from different institutions. Provincial Youth Development Officer Jhunlie Escala spoke on the diverse circumstances, experiences, and abilities of young people while encouraging them to work toward the shared aspirations of Pagkakaisa, Pag-unlad, at Pag-asa.
During the afternoon sessions, Mayor Raymund “Monmon” C. Uy delivered his message of support and reaffirmed the City Government’s commitment to empowering young Calbayognons as partners in leadership and community development. The program also featured Jonah L. Salcedo, Planning Officer of Northwest Samar State University, who discussed Legacy in Action: Leaving a Lasting Impact Beyond Your Term; Raymund V. Montes, RSW, of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, who presented Pathways for Young Leaders in Public Service and Community Development; and Maricel Gallego of Plan International Pilipinas, who tackled Financial Accountability, Turnover, and Compliance.
Through the series of discussions and youth-led activities, Linggo ng Kabataan 2026 provided young Calbayognons with a space to reflect on leadership, accountability, technology, and their responsibility in responding to issues affecting their communities. For the DILG Calbayog City Operations Office, the engagement also reinforced the continuing role of young people as active partners in local governance and in shaping the future of Calbayog City.
