On the western reaches of Tarlac province there lies the historic town of Camiling. In the beginning, Camiling was a vast area of cogon growth interspersed with thick-forested area stretching to the Zambales mountain ranges. A wide
river cut peacefully through the terrain where fish, like dalag and anguilas, abounds. The town of Camiling owe its name after the tree Camiring which grew abundantly in the wilderness that, when it comes in contact with the skin, produces an irritatingly itchy sensation. But then, due to some difficulties encountered in its pronunciation, the letter “R” in “Camiring” was changed to “L” as years passed. The early inhabitants of the place were known as the “Aetas” who depended on fruit trees, hunting, and fishing. However, with the coming of the Pangasinenses and Ilocanos from the north, the aetas who used to roam freely in the wilderness, obliged themselves to move into the interior. The new settlers first occupied the swampy land, now known as “Cacamilingan”, on the opposite of the river. With the passage of time, these settlers moved to the opposite shore in view of the fact that present site is often visited by disastrous floods. To this new location, the residents built a little church or visita with the villagers taking St. As this settlement attained progress, Camiling became a District Commission from 1834-1837. Whereby, early in the eighteenth century, this thriving community was a sitio of Paniqui, contrary to the popular belief that it was a part of Bayambang, Pangasinan. The discovery of a Spanish document in 1937 attested that it certainly belonged to Paniqui. Further evidence, as stated in that document, the inhabitants of Camiling paid tributes to Paniqui. Therein, in 1838, Camiling became an independent town formally separated from its mother town Paniqui with Don Vicente Galsim as the first Gobernadorcillo. Now, the wonderful town of Camiling continuously attains progress and development through steadfast leadership that persisted to date. The townspeople now known as the Camileños, endeavor to partake in fostering a great community.
