Catfish got their name from the “𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬” around their mouths, but these aren’t whiskers at all.
The name catfish comes from its barbel-like “whiskers”, which resemble those of a cat. More than just for looks, these barbels function as super sensitive antennae filled with taste buds and sensory cells. Moreover, it helps catfish to taste, smell, detect food and navigate even in dark and muddy waters where sight is limited.
