The relentless surge in fuel prices, worsened by the Oil Deregulation Law and regressive taxes, has reached a critical point. For the drivers and operators who survive on a constant daily income, they are a direct threat to their livelihood and their ability to provide for their families. For students who rely on jeepneys to go to school, the oil price surge may mean higher jeepney fares, and inflation on basic goods and products.

We recognize that participating in this protest is a massive sacrifice for our drivers who are risking themselves from earning their daily income. In an industry where earnings are already depleted by high pump prices, choosing to strike is a courageous act of protest for the benefit of the riding public and the Filipino masses.

To support the participating drivers, we are launching this donation drive where the money received will be given to the participating drivers who will have zero earnings during these two days of protest.

Since the 6.9 magnitude earthquake last September 30 and the devastation brought by typhoon Tino on the midnight of November 4, the province of Cebu has been dealing with the damages and losses brought by these calamities. Whether homes and other infrastructures ended up damaged or not, it doesnโ€™t make the psychological toll it dealt towards the masses insignificant, who are continuously forced to function normally amidst abnormal circumstances.

And in between all of this, public officials from our local government and the administration of President Bongbong Marcos continue with their theatrics, responding to the peopleโ€™s concerns with hollow calls to action, subpar flood control projects, and making sure their names are known through the relief goods they give to instill the belief that we should be grateful for their helpโ€”even when this is one of their basic duties. By misusing the funds of the people for their own interests, they continue to endanger us.

For the lives continuously lost to man-made calamities, let us come together to pray to Our Lord and exercise our right to protest. Join us at 5PM for the USC Main Campus Pharmacy for the Candle Light Protest this Monday, November 24, 2025.

In light of the devastation brought by Typhoon Tino last November 4, 2025, DASIG is launching a donation drive to extend support to one of our executive officers, Kate Travero, and her family.

Their household was severely affected by the typhoon, with floodwaters reaching chest level and damaging their food supplies, furniture, and appliances. Until now, their area remains without electricity and clean water, and access to transportation has been difficult due to muddy roads.

The Travero family, together with their grandmother and relatives, are in urgent need of drinkable water, non-perishable food, and other basic necessities.

Through this initiative, all proceeds will go directly toward purchasing and delivering these essential items to their home in Paknaan, Mandaue.

In light of the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake and its continuing aftershocks, the USC Supreme Student Council has formally submitted a letter to Fr. Jesuraj Anthonipappen, SVD, Vice President for Academic Affairs, reiterating the call of the Carolinian student body for the suspension of classes and the implementation of academic leniency.

The letter appeals for the University Administration to:

1. Suspend all classes and academic activities, and shift to asynchronous learning from October 6 to 11, 2025, until all buildings and facilities are certified safe for use;

2. Grant academic leniency through extended deadlines and flexible requirements; and

3. Ensure full transparency in the inspection and certification of university facilities prior to the resumption of face-to-face classes.

These appeals were grounded in the collective data and concerns gathered through the Councilโ€™s university-wide petition and student survey, which reflect the continuing struggles of Carolinians to recover from the disaster. As of October 4, 2025, 3:00 PM, a total of 1,741 students have signed the petition, and 670 have responded to the survey, highlighting widespread difficulties including unstable internet access, unsafe environments, emotional distress, and damage to homes.

The Council emphasizes that these numbers are not mere statistics, they represent the lived realities of hundreds of Carolinians who continue to balance academic responsibilities with safety concerns, family obligations, and participation in ongoing relief efforts.

While the Council acknowledges the Administrationโ€™s recent decision to postpone midterm examinations and transition to online classes, we assert that a full class suspension and comprehensive academic leniency remain necessary to ensure the safety, recovery, and well-being of the student body.

In the spirit of Scientia, Virtus, et Devotio, the USC Supreme Student Council reaffirms its commitment to advocate for the best interests of all Carolinians. We urge the University Administration to act decisively and compassionately in response to this collective appeal.

Full survey results will be released within the day. Amping, Carolinians!

ANNOUNCEMENT | USC ADMIN ADJUSTS ACADEMIC CALENDAR AMIDST EARTHQUAKE AFTERMATH

Following multiple calls from the Carolinian community to prioritize safety and student welfare in the aftermath of the recent earthquake, the University Administration has issued an official memorandum announcing adjustments to the academic calendar for the First Semester, Academic Year 2025โ€“2026.

1. Classes from October 6โ€“11, 2025 will continue online, except for essential in-person sessions such as laboratory and practicum classes.
2. Midterm Examinations are postponed to October 13โ€“18, 2025, with grade submissions due on October 30, 2025.
3. University Days (October 20โ€“25, 2025) will proceed with revisions to limit large gatherings.
4. Regular classes will resume on October 27, 2025.
5. Final Examinations remain scheduled for December 9โ€“13, 2025, with final grade submissions on December 28, 2025.
6. Administrative employees will resume in-person work beginning October 6, 2025.

The Council recognizes this as a direct response to the collective appeals of Carolinians for the postponement of examinations and the prioritization of student safety. However, we continue to assert that the administration must also suspend classes to accommodate Carolinians who remain without access to stable electricity, internet connection, or safe living conditions as a result of the recent disaster.

The USC Supreme Student Council extends its gratitude to all Carolinians who have raised their concerns and stood in solidarity to advance the welfare of the student body. The Council remains steadfast in its call for compassionate, student-centered measures and urges everyone to remain vigilant and united as the Carolinian community recovers together.

POSTPONE MIDTERMS NOW! DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY ON ADMINโ€™S NEGLIGENCE AND ITS STUDENT REPRESSION

Gabriela Youth University of San Carlos Chapter (USC) strongly condemns the USC administration's silence on studentsโ€™ appeal to postpone the upcoming midterm examination. We call on the university administration to suspend classes and freeze any academic related activities as the immediate response to the devastating 6.9 magnitude earthquake. There should be an immediate action from the university ensuring the safety and welfare of the entire Carolinian community.

However, with the following advisories from the administration, the university only disregarded the calls of the studentry and proceeded to still hold classes. Gabriela Youth USC emphasizes how the decision from the admin puts the safety and welfare at risk for the sake of routine and institutional profit.

USC as Insensitive and Anti-Student

While mass organizations, student councils, co-curricular organizations, and other formations are actively raising donations, leading relief drives, and mobilizing aid disaster-stricken communities, the USC administration instead burdens the students and faculties with exams and requirements.

The university should have shown solidarity with the struggles of its students and their families, yet the administration chose to enforce business-as-usual. This is a big disrespect and proves a sheer amount of insensitivity. This only exposes USC's detached, profit-driven, and neoliberal character of the education wherein it only treats students as mere cogs in its machinery rather than as human beings with real conditions and needs.

How This Connects to the Larger Pattern of Repression

The disaster response of the university is not isolated to the broader political climate of the university. It is in fact consistent with USCโ€™s long record of repression against students. One of which is the stripping Office of Student Formations and Affairs (OSFA) registration and defunding the student council, the Supreme Student Council, and the official student publication, Today's Carolinian. This strips the very right to organize of the studentry furthering the repression inside the university.

We have seen how the university blocks the student voices and the democratic spaces attacking the right to organize and campaign for studentsโ€™ rights and welfare.

The adminโ€™s silence on the students' appeal to postpone and the widespread clamor for suspension proves this that it is a continuation of its anti-student, anti-people orientation as a capitalist-educator. Its negligence is deeply rooted in the neoliberal framework where schools serve as corporationsโ€”prioritizing control, compliance, and profit over genuine concern of the youth and students.

Our Demands

Gabriela Youth - USC asserts the following:
1. POSTPONE MIDTERMS AND SUSPEND CLASSES until safety and recovery are assured.
2. SUPPORT STUDENT-LED RELIEF OPERATIONS
3. UPHOLD THE RIGHT TO ORGANIZE. We demand accountability on the defunding of student institutions that are now in the frontline of disaster response.
4. HOLD THE ADMIN ACCOUNTABLE for its negligence and insensitivity.

The call to postpone midterms is inseparable from the broader struggle to defend the democratic rights of students. An administration that forces unsafe academic compliance in times of disaster is a very same administration that silences council and publication, denies funding, and represses student organizations through bureaucratic hurdles.

Gabriela Youth emphasizes that only through collective action can students assert our right to safety and organize. We call on all students to resist repression, amply relief efforts, and defend our right to organize.
