In observance of National Disaster Consciousness Month, the Central Cebu Protected Landscape - Protected Area Management Office (CCPL-PAMO) continues to strengthen community resilience across the region. Anchored on this year's theme, "Naghahanda at Kumikilos Tungo sa Panatag Ng Bagong Pilipinas," the office remains dedicated to empowering local communities with the necessary knowledge and tools to effectively prepare for and respond to natural hazards.

To turn this theme into direct action, CCPL-PAMO partnered with student interns from Cebu Normal University (CNU) and Velez College to conduct a targeted information drive. Together, the team distributed Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) brochures directly to Cebu City barangays that are highly vulnerable to landslides and flashfloods.

These distributed brochures outline essential safety tips, early warning signs, and critical emergency action plans to help residents protect their families and properties. Through continuous outreach and grassroots education, CCPL-PAMO, CNU, and Velez College reaffirm that proactive preparation and community involvement are the true foundations of a safe and disaster-resilient nation.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗚𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗻𝗮𝗻

In celebration of Philippine Environment Month, CCPL personnel, student interns from Cebu Normal University (CNU) and Velez College, and local residents trekked deep into the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL) to experience the Tabunan Forest. As one of the island's very last remaining intact old-growth rainforests, this ancient woodland is a priceless ecological gift to Cebu.

It serves as a vital sanctuary for rare, endemic wildlife and ancient flora found nowhere else on Earth, making its survival absolutely critical to the province's environmental balance.

Led by veteran local tour guide Mr. Oking, of Brgy. Tabunan, the diverse group of personnel, interns, and locals experienced this biological treasure trove firsthand. Navigating the dense canopy, participants were treated to the raw, untamed beauty of a forest that has withstood the test of time. Mr. Oking's intimate knowledge of the terrain highlighted the forest's irreplaceable value, transforming the hike into a shared learning experience about the rich biodiversity that continues to sustain the island's ecosystems.

However, receiving the gift of this wilderness comes with a strict responsibility for both the seasoned locals and the next generation of professionals. Throughout the journey, Mr. Oking continuously reminded the group to honor the forest by practicing the ethos of "Leave No Trace but Memories" during the trek.

As urban development expands across Cebu, his message underscores a vital truth: the priceless gift of the Tabunan Forest can only be preserved for future generations if all visitors commit to leaving it completely undisturbed.

Protecting Cebu’s vital forests takes more than just good intentions; it requires a firm grip on the rules that keep nature safe.

In celebration of Philippine Environment Month, local leaders and residents of Barangay Tabunan gathered for an educational seminar aimed at strengthening the enforcement of environmental laws. The upland barangay serves as a critical frontline for conservation, as it sits directly within the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL)—a massive protected forest that supplies Cebu City with its water and clean air.

The event’s main speaker, Atty. Kristine Grace Mina, broke down complex legal codes into clear, practical steps for the community. Atty. Mina heavily emphasized that strictly reinforcing these laws is a legal duty, not an option, especially for a community located inside a protected zone. She warned that Tabunan must remain extra vigilant against illegal cutting of trees, unauthorized building, and resource destruction, as any damage to the area threatens the entire province's ecosystem.

Recognizing their role as frontline guardians, officials from the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Tabunan actively participated to realign their local policies with national conservation laws. As the administrative caretakers of a key CCPL zone, the BLGU leaders pledged to use Atty. Mina’s legal insights to tighten local monitoring and community policing.

The seminar concluded with a unified message, safeguarding Cebu's remaining forest cover depends entirely on the active partnership between strict laws and watchful neighbors.

To secure our water future, we must embrace this year's theme and fully Recognize, Respect, and Restore this vital ecosystem. We must recognize its role in preventing severe water scarcity, respect its boundaries by halting destructive activities, and actively restore its degraded areas through reforestation.

CEBU CITY, June 18, 2026 – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 7 (DENR-7) officially launched “Bahandi sa Kinaiyahan: Kinabuhi, Kabilin, ug Kalikupan,” a Biodiversity and Protected Area Exhibit that showcases the rich natural heritage, diverse ecosystems, and protected landscapes and seascapes of Cebu and Bohol.

Held at SM City Cebu, the four-day exhibit runs from June 18 to 21, 2026, featuring the 22 Protected Areas of Cebu and Bohol and highlighting the importance of biodiversity conservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.

Anchored on the theme “Pag-ila, Pag-amuma, ug Pagpanalipod sa mga Bahandi sa Kinaiyahan sa SugBohol,” the exhibit aims to deepen public appreciation of the region’s ecological treasures and inspire collective action in protecting the environment.

The opening program was attended by key regional leaders, including Cebu Provincial Administrator Secretary Ace Durano, NRDC Executive Vice President Joel Erestain, DOT-7 Regional Director Gelena Dimpas, and Cebu City Chief of Staff Kenneth Siasar. They joined officials from DENR-7, representatives from partner agencies, local government units, environmental advocates, and students who gathered to celebrate the region’s biodiversity and conservation milestones.

Through captivating visual displays, educational materials, interactive exhibits, and stunning photographs of protected areas, visitors are given an opportunity to explore the unique ecosystems that support countless species of plants and animals, many of which are found only in the Philippines.

Regional Executive Director Laudemir S. Salac emphasized that biodiversity is not merely an environmental concern but a foundation of life, culture, and sustainable communities.

“Every protected area tells a story of life, resilience, and stewardship. Through this exhibit, we hope to strengthen public awareness that conserving biodiversity is not solely the responsibility of government agencies—it is a shared responsibility of every Filipino,” Salac said.

The exhibit highlights the ecological significance of forests, wetlands, mangrove areas, marine protected zones, watersheds, caves, and other critical habitats found across Cebu and Bohol. It also showcases ongoing conservation initiatives undertaken by DENR and its partners to protect threatened species, restore degraded ecosystems, and strengthen community participation in environmental protection.

More than an educational showcase, Bahandi sa Kinaiyahan serves as a platform for connecting people with nature and fostering a deeper understanding of how biodiversity contributes to food security, climate resilience, water resources, tourism, and local livelihoods.

Complementing the exhibit is the DENR Express on Wheels, which brings selected frontline services directly to the public. The mobile service center offers information and assistance on land, forestry, wildlife, environmental compliance, mining, and biodiversity-related concerns, reflecting DENR’s commitment to making government services more accessible and responsive.

As visitors journey through the exhibit, they are encouraged not only to admire the beauty of nature but also to become active partners in its protection. By showcasing the invaluable natural treasures of Cebu and Bohol, DENR-7 hopes to cultivate a stronger culture of environmental responsibility and inspire future generations to safeguard the country’s biodiversity.

Deep within the misty, vibrant ridges of the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL) lies the vital life-support system of our island. To celebrate World Environment Day under the powerful theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future," the community of Barangay Tabunan didn't just talk about conservation—we put on our gloves and took action.

In a powerful joint effort, the dedicated team of the CCPL alongside the Barangay Local Government Unit (BLGU) of Tabunan launched a massive Roadside Clean-Up Activity along the bustling Transcentral Highway, proving that protecting our planet begins right at our doorstep.

The Transcentral Highway, while a scenic gateway for travelers, frequently bears the heavy scar of human neglect. Together, volunteers and local leaders combed the roadsides of Brgy. Tabunan, painstakingly recovering a staggering 60 sacks of trash. Every plastic bottle, discarded wrapper, and piece of debris removed was a small victory for our climate and a step toward restoring the pristine beauty of this protected watershed. Seeing the community unite for this cause was a beautiful reminder that when we allow ourselves to be truly inspired by nature, we find the collective strength to defend it.

This cleanup was more than just a one-day event; it was a fierce declaration for our future. The CCPL is Cebu's ecological spine, and its preservation is directly tied to our survival amidst a changing climate. By clearing 60 sacks of waste from this critical ecosystem, BLGU Tabunan and the CCPL management have set a standard for what localized climate action looks like.

Let this be a reminder to every commuter, tourist, and local: our future depends on the respect we show to nature today. Let's keep Cebu green, clean, and thriving for the generations yet to come!

Change begins when a community decides to take ownership of its environment. This was vividly demonstrated during the recent Roadside Clean-Up Activity along the scenic stretches of the Transcentral Highway in Barangay Gaas, Balamban, Cebu. Led by the proactive leadership of BLGU Gaas, headed by Barangay Captain Hon. Eleuterio Gentapa, alongside his dedicated barangay personnel and Balamban Municipal Councilor Hon. William Genel, the initiative served as a powerful reminder that progress and preservation go hand in hand.

Under the morning sun, volunteers and local leaders stood side by side, united by a shared vision of a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming Balamban. The Transcentral Highway, known for its breathtaking mountain views and refreshing breeze, deserves to be treated with respect, not marred by litter.

Through sheer teamwork, determination, and a collective sense of bayanihan, the team successfully gathered a staggering 32 sacks of garbage, restoring the natural charm of the roadside and ensuring a safer, more pristine environment for both residents and travelers.

This successful cleanup is more than just a one-day event; it is a call to action for everyone who passes through these beautiful hills. It reminds us that our environment reflects our discipline and love for our home. By working together, Hon. Gentapa, Hon. Genel, and the people of Barangay Gaas have set an inspiring example of civic duty, proving that when leadership meets community action, we can pave the way toward a sustainable and beautiful future.

As we celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, with the theme “Acting locally for global impact,” let us come together to honor our role in preserving Cebu’s natural treasures. Every year on May 22, the world unites to recognize the importance of protecting life in all its forms—and right here at home, the Central Cebu Protected Landscape (CCPL) stands as our proud contribution to this global cause.

Legally established under the CCPL Act (RA 9486) and the ENIPAS Act (RA 11038), the CCPL is far more than just a protected area—it is the lifeblood of our province. As a crucial watershed, it supplies the water that flows through our homes, nourishes our farms, and sustains our industries. Yet, safeguarding this vital resource is not the responsibility of the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) alone. True and lasting environmental stewardship demands the active participation of every member of our local communities. Together, our actions can forge a legacy of sustainability and resilience for generations to come.

Our local actions in Cebu matter now more than ever. The Philippines is a true “megadiversity” powerhouse, harboring 70% of all life forms on the planet and ranking as the most diverse country in the world on a per-hectare basis. We are home to approximately 52,177 species—half of which are endemic, found nowhere else on Earth. But this remarkable richness is under threat: our national forest cover has plummeted from 72% in 1900 to just 18–20% today. With at least 932 species now considered endangered or extinct in our country, acting locally is our strongest defense against the “Tragedy of the Commons,” where individual self-interest can lead to the depletion of vital shared resources.

By protecting this landscape, we uphold the “L.A.W. of Life”—our Land, Air, and Water—ensuring they remain healthy and productive for all Cebuanos. We must embrace Intergenerational Responsibility: our legal and moral duty to use natural resources wisely so our descendants inherit their rightful share.

History shows that when communities take the lead, nature rebounds. The Apo Island sanctuary in the Philippines saw fish catch soar within four years of community management, and the Chipko Movement proved that local action could halt deforestation and achieve survival rates as high as 80–90%.

Today, let this be our clarion call to protect the habitats of Cebu’s unique endemic species. We must save our very own Siloy (Copsychus cebuensis), Cebu Boobook (Ninox rumseyi), and Nipot-nipot (Cynometra cebuensis), among others. These are not merely “biological data”; they are our neighbors and vital indicators of our watershed’s health and the richness of our biodiversity.

Within the CCPL, let’s uphold the “Must-Dos” of conservation to sustain our heritage. As partners in governance, we must ensure every activity complies with environmental laws, rules, and regulations, and is grounded in sound science. By collectively contributing to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) targets, we are not merely saving the CCPL’s biodiversity—we are securing the very water and environment that sustain our lives.
