Led by ๐——๐—ฟ. ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ฎ. ๐— . ๐—”๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€, the sessions then covered the journey from biological samples to data generation, including sample preparation, quality control, OMICS technologies, and bioinformatics. Participants were reminded that while computational tools can process large and complex datasets, meaningful interpretation still depends on sound scientific judgment.

The training also highlighted responsible OMICS research, including informed consent, data stewardship, biodiversity, traditional knowledge, and ethical responsibilities throughout the research lifecycle.

Most importantly, participants were challenged to apply what they learned to real and locally relevant research problems in Central Visayas. The activity culminated in the development of preliminary OMICS research concepts, with three participants presenting selected concepts for expert feedback.

Among the ideas shared were a study on fermented Padina sp. as a functional feed additive for pigs using metabolomics and metagenomics, and an integrated viromic and transcriptomic analysis of insect-specific viruses as potential modifiers of dengue virus infection in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from Cebu.

These outputs demonstrated how OMICS can move beyond theory and become a practical tool for generating stronger evidence in health, agriculture, environmental research, and One Health.

Through this two-day virtual training, DOST Central Visayas and CVCHRD continue to strengthen the capability of the regional research community to develop well-designed, responsible, collaborative, and locally responsive research that can contribute to better health outcomes and innovation in Central Visayas.

The activity aims to strengthen the capacity of researchers to understand and apply omics approaches in addressing health and allied health research questions.

With ๐——๐—ฟ. ๐—๐—ผ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐— ๐—ฎ. ๐— . ๐—”๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜€, Chairperson of the Department of Parasitology, College of Public Health, UP Manila, as resource speaker, the first day covered the foundations of systems biology and the different branches of omicsโ€”including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and microbiomics.

The sessions also highlighted how researchers can select the appropriate omics approach for a research question and design more robust studies through proper sample selection, controls, replication, metadata, management of batch effects, and validation.

For the health research community, these competencies can help researchers examine complex health problems more comprehensively and generate stronger, more relevant evidence that may support future diagnostics, interventions, and health strategies.

The learning continues tomorrow, August 25, with sessions on omics technologies, bioinformatics, ethics and data governance, research opportunities, and the development of preliminary omics research concepts.

Through this initiative, DOST Central Visayas and CVCHRD continue to strengthen the capability of the health research community to harness emerging scientific approaches toward more relevant, rigorous, and locally responsive health research.

The final day of the 19th Philippine National Health Research System Week featured Plenary Sessions 2 and 3, with discussions on inclusive and community-engaged health research and on translating Filipino research into policy and practice.

The sessions reinforced an important message: research becomes more meaningful when it responds to communities and when evidence moves beyond publication into actual decisions, policies, programs, and practice.

Plenary Session 3, โ€œEmpowering Solutions: Translating Filipino Research into Policy and Practice,โ€ further emphasized the need to engage policymakers and stakeholders early, use credible local evidence, and communicate research in ways that can lead to concrete action.

The celebration concluded on a proud note for Central Visayas as ๐— ๐—ฟ. ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ž๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต ๐—”๐˜€๐—ถ๐—น๐—ผ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—–๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐˜‚ ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† was awarded ๐Ÿฏ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ in the DOST-PCHRD Undergraduate Thesis Grant in Natural Products Oral Research Presentation Competition.

His achievement highlights the potential of young researchers from the region to contribute meaningful evidence and innovation to the countryโ€™s health research agenda.

Congratulations to Francis Kenneth and to all our Central Visayas researchers and presenters for representing the region on the national stage!

These platforms go beyond competition. The 3MP provides researchers an avenue to translate evidence into clear and actionable policy recommendations, while the poster and oral research presentations help communicate research findings, strengthen the visibility of regional research, and connect promising studies with the wider health research community.

Through these presentations, Central Visayas contributes to the shared goal of the PNHRS of strengthening collaboration and advancing research that responds to the health needs of Filipino communities.

We are proud of our Central Visayas researchers and presenters for bringing their work and perspectives to the national stage.

Congratulations, and thank you for representing Central Visayas and CVCHRD!
