RA No. 8976
Food fortification means adding important vitamins and minerals to common foods to help keep people healthy and prevent sickness caused by lack of nutrients.
In the Philippines, this is guided by Republic Act No. 8976 or the Philippine Food Fortification Act of 2000. The goal of this law is to help reduce malnutrition and prevent illnesses caused by lack of Vitamin A, iron, and iodine.
Foods Required to be Fortified
The government requires some everyday foods to have added nutrients before they are sold:
Rice – with Iron
Flour – with Vitamin A and Iron
Sugar – with Vitamin A
Cooking Oil – with Vitamin A
These nutrients help:
strengthen the immune system
prevent anemia
support proper growth and development
improve overall health of children and adults
What is Sangkap Pinoy Seal?
Some companies voluntarily add extra vitamins and minerals to their products. If approved by the Department of Health, they receive the Sangkap Pinoy Seal. This seal tells consumers that the product contains added nutrients that may help improve nutrition.
Why is Food Fortification Important?
Food fortification helps families get important nutrients even from the foods they eat every day. It is a simple and effective way to help fight malnutrition in the community.
Reminder to the Community
