History comes alive through preservation, restoration, and historical reconstruction.

Featured here are three rare glimpses into the legacy of the Del Rosario family of Claveria, Masbate: an old portrait of Marcelo Del Rosario and his third wife, Eduveges “Bibing” Salvacion, digitally restored and colorized; a historical photograph of their ancestral house before portions of it were lost to typhoons and the passage of time; and a recreated visualization of how the Marcelo Del Rosario Ancestral House may have appeared in the early 20th century, complete with the couple standing outside their home as townspeople go about their daily lives.

Marcelo Del Rosario was among the notable residents of early American-era Claveria. In 1901, he was appointed Auxiliary of Peace, assisting in the maintenance of public order during the transition to American civil rule. The following year, in 1902, he was appointed Auxiliary of the Justice of the Peace, helping in the administration of local justice and the settlement of minor disputes within the community.

The Del Rosario family would later become one of Claveria's prominent families, with succeeding generations serving the public and holding elective positions in the municipality. Through these restored photographs and historical reconstructions, we gain a clearer window into the people, places, and stories that shaped the rich heritage of Claveria and Masbate.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐕𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄 𝐃𝐄𝐋 𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐎 𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄

The first image shows the Vicente Del Rosario Ancestral House as it stands today in Claveria, Masbate, while the second and third images are artistic reconstructions of how the house may have appeared during World War II.

During the Japanese Occupation, the house was reportedly used as a Japanese military garrison. On January 15, 1944, Filipino guerrillas under Lieutenant Jarden attacked the garrison, resulting in the deaths of four Japanese soldiers and one guerrilla casualty. The surviving Japanese troops reportedly retreated toward Navasagan.

Today, a few bullet holes can still be seen on parts of the house, serving as lasting reminders of this wartime encounter. These images help visualize an important chapter in Claveria's history and the role of one of its historic ancestral houses.

A meaningful and productive day unfolded in Claveria on May 30, 2026, following the heritage talk delivered in San Pascual by Mr. Mark Jerome Torres- a local historian from Masbate City.

The short visit provided an excellent opportunity not only to engage with local history and culture but also to explore potential partnerships aimed at preserving and promoting the municipality's rich heritage resources.

One of the highlights of the day was a short meeting with Senior Tourism Officer Ma'am Grace G. Sevilla. During the discussion, they exchanged ideas on possible projects, programs, and activities that could contribute to the conservation, documentation, and promotion of Claveria's cultural and historical heritage. Their conversation emphasized the importance of protecting local historical sites, ancestral houses, traditions, and community stories while fostering greater appreciation for these treasures among both residents and visitors.

Following the meeting, a tour to some historical landmarks and ancestral homes throughout the municipality was conducted. The visit offered valuable insights into Claveria's remarkable past and provided a deeper appreciation of the town's unique cultural identity. Each site revealed stories of the people, families, and events that have shaped the community over the years, highlighting the enduring significance of heritage in understanding and preserving local identity. It also underscored the importance of safeguarding both tangible and intangible heritage.

From historic architecture to local traditions and collective memory, Claveria possesses a wealth of cultural resources that deserve continued protection and recognition. Such heritage assets not only connect present generations to their past but also serve as important educational and tourism resources for the future.

The experience concluded with optimism for future collaborations and initiatives that will continue to celebrate, preserve, and promote the rich cultural and historical heritage of Claveria, ensuring that its stories and treasures remain a source of pride for the community and a valuable legacy for future generations.

𝐈𝐍 𝐏𝐇𝐎𝐓𝐎𝐒 | With pride and gratitude, the Municipal Tourism Office of Claveria, Masbate warmly celebrates the successful completion of the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence Training last April 30, 2026 at the 2nd floor of the LGU-Claveria, Conference Hall spearheaded by the Department of Tourism – Region V through the initiative of this office.

The FBSE training brought together local tourism stakeholders, equipping them with the values and skills needed to deliver exceptional service anchored on genuine Filipino hospitality. It is designed to deepen participants’ appreciation of core Filipino values and genuine care for guests, while translating these values into concrete service practices. Through this training, participants gained practical knowledge and skills that will enhance customer satisfaction, strengthen local tourism identity, and contribute to the overall positive image of our municipality.

This milestone reflects our shared commitment to raising the standards of tourism service and embracing the warmth, excellence, and hospitality that truly define the Filipino spirit.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the DOT Region V team (Resource Speaker and Facilitators) for their invaluable support and to all participants for their enthusiasm and dedication all throughout the training.
