The 1st Quarterly Meeting of the Deputy Environment and Natural Resources Officers (DENROs) of Columbio, held on January 9, 2026, marked an important step toward more responsive and effective environmental governance.

A key highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the plan to strengthen environmental monitoring through the use of communication technology and the Environmental Incident Report (EIR) Tool, developed with the valuable support of the University of Southern Mindanao. This tool aims to improve real-time reporting, documentation, and response to environmental concerns across barangays.

By enhancing coordination and equipping DENROs with practical digital tools, the LGU of Columbio continues to reinforce its commitment to biodiversity conservation, environmental law enforcement, and community-based protection of natural resources. This initiative strengthens local action, supports informed decision-making, and ensures a more proactive approach to safeguarding our environment.

LOOK! Municipality of Columbio mobilized its 16 barangays for a community-wide clean-up effort on September 19, 2025 in line with the observance of the International Coastal Clean Up lead by DENR-Environment Management Bureau (EMB) 12.

While Columbio has no coastal areas, its participation highlights a commitment to the broader goals of the global initiative. Volunteers focused their efforts on cleaning public spaces, highways, canals, and other local water bodies, preventing inland trash from reaching and polluting major waterways.

The activity was a collaborative effort involving various sectors, underscoring that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility. TIGNAN: Barangay Makat, Columbio, Sultan Kudarat – Isang matagumpay na programa ang isinagawa noong Setyembre 12, 2025, sa Barangay Makat, kung saan 300 katutubong puno ang itinanim sa paligid ng Barangay Hall. Ang aktibidad ay bahagi ng Tree Growing Initiative ng Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) ng bayan ng Columbio bilang hakbang para sa pagtugon sa mga hamon ng pagbabago ng klima.

Pinangunahan ang pagtatanim ng mga puno ni Punong Barangay Abusama Manamba, kasama ang mga Barangay Kagawads, mga opisyal ng Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), mga tanod, kababaihan, at mga boluntaryo mula sa komunidad. Ang mga kalahok ay nagkusa at sama-samang nagtrabaho upang magtanim ng mga katutubong puno na makakatulong sa pagpapabuti ng kalikasan at magbigay ng proteksyon laban sa mga epekto ng pagbabago ng klima.

Ayon kay Punong Barangay Manamba, ang inisyatiba ay isang malaking hakbang upang mapanatili at mapalaganap ang mga puno sa barangay bilang bahagi ng mas malawak na kampanya ng munisipalidad laban sa global warming at iba pang isyu ng kalikasan. “Ang pagtatanim ng mga puno ay hindi lamang para sa kasalukuyan, kundi para na rin sa kinabukasan ng mga susunod na henerasyon,” dagdag pa ni Manamba.

Ang Tree Growing Initiative ng MENRO ay isang mahalagang proyekto na naglalayong magtanim ng mga puno sa iba't ibang bahagi ng Columbio upang mabawasan ang epekto ng polusyon, mapabuti ang kalidad ng hangin, at magbigay ng tirahan para sa mga lokal na wildlife. Isa rin itong hakbang upang mapalakas ang kamalayan ng mga mamamayan tungkol sa kahalagahan ng kalikasan sa pagharap sa mga epekto ng climate change.

Ang aktibidad ay nagbigay ng pagkakataon sa mga residente ng Barangay Makat na maging bahagi ng solusyon sa paglaban sa mga epekto ng pagbabago ng klima at magtulungan upang mapanatili ang kalikasan para sa mga susunod na henerasyon.

LOOK: LGU Columbio Joins National Ozone Layer Protection Effort

The Local Government of the Municipality of Columbio has reinforced its commitment to environmental preservation by participating in the national initiative to protect the ozone layer. During the Monday convocation, Mr. Lauro V. Domondon Jr., led an awareness session highlighting the crucial role the ozone layer plays in shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can lead to severe health problems, including skin cancer and cataracts, as well as contribute to climate change. Mr.
Domondon emphasized that the protection of the ozone layer is a global responsibility and requires local action.

Following the informative session, a tree planting activity was organized, with the participation of Department heads and LGU employees. The initiative, which directly contributes to environmental sustainability, serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the ozone layer. Trees help improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and promote healthier ecosystems, supporting efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of ozone depletion.

MENRO Domondon urged all government employees to adopt sustainable practices and support initiatives that reduce ozone-depleting activities. By taking these steps, Columbio’s local government aims to create a ripple effect within the community, inspiring individuals to contribute to the global effort of ozone layer protection for the well-being of future generations.

LOOK: Joint Operation in Columbio Seizes Over 7,000 Board Feet of Illegally Cut Timber

Columbio, Sultan Kudarat – On the morning of August 26, 2025, a collaborative operation led by various local and environmental authorities successfully apprehended 7,069.35 board feet of illegally cut timber in the Municipality of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat. The operation was the culmination of a series of intelligence reports regarding illegal logging activities in the region, sparking immediate action from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the Columbio Municipal Police Station, and Barangay Eday authorities.

The operation, which commenced at approximately 9:00 AM, was spearheaded by Barangay Chairman Miguel M. Lumayong, in close coordination with Forest Ranger Marcelo S. Gusanan and a dedicated team of DENR personnel.

The confiscated timber, consisting of Falcata round logs, has an estimated market value of PHP 282,774.00. The logs were seized and are now under the custody of Barangay Eday authorities, awaiting further processing and appropriate legal action by the DENR.

Barangay Chairman Lumayong, along with the team of apprehending officers, ensured that all the seized items were properly documented. The custody receipt was signed by the apprehending officers and witnesses, attesting to the legality of the operation.

This successful operation underscores the commitment of local authorities and the DENR in combating illegal logging activities, which continue to pose a significant threat to the environment and biodiversity. The authorities involved are determined to take appropriate measures to ensure the seized timber is processed according to the law.

Further investigation into the source of the illegal timber is expected as authorities continue to uphold environmental protection laws in the municipality of Columbio.
