The Essence of the Bangsamoro political Struggle and the Way Forward
By: Rajah Habib Alawi
The 1976 and 1996 Peace Agreements stand as monumental results of the sacrifices of the MNLF led Bangsmoro Struggle Fiy Sabilillah courageously chaired by our Founding Leader His Excellency, Prof. Nur P. Misuari. From the 1970s until the late 1990s, the armed struggle reached its peak, fueled by the blood, sweat, and tears of the Mujahideen. Yet as Allah (SWT) reminds us, โIndeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselvesโ (Qurโan 13:11). Time has evolved, and today a new battlefield has emergedโnot with rifles and trenches, but within the political institutions born out of our struggle.
But let this be clear: participation in governance must not be entered in haste. It requires patience, preparation, and strategy. Politics in our country is not a straight path; it is a mire of deception, rivalry, and corruption. To plunge into it unprepared is to risk the very soul of our struggle. For this reason, it is not the duty of our ground leaders in the countryside to wrestle in this arena. Rather, this task must be entrusted to our trained political cadresโthose equipped with the knowledge, vision, discipline, strategy and resilience to protect the Noble Goal and Sacred Quest for peace, justice, and development in the Bangsamoro Homeland. The ultimate dedication and commitment to our Hula', Bangsa and Agama.
Our commanders and the masses must be shielded from the enticements and dangers of partisan politics. Their honor must be preserved, their loyalty to the cause safeguarded, and their role in the struggle kept pure. As the Prophet ๏ทบ warned, โYou will be eager for leadership, but it will be a cause of regret on the Day of Judgmentโ (Bukhari, Muslim). Leadership, therefore, is not a prize to be claimed but a trust (amanah) to be carried with fear of Allah and with accountability to the people.
We must be reminded of the lessons learned on the establishments of Lupong Tagapagpaganap ng Pook (LTP) and ARMM . And the new challenges and pressures for now is the BARMM. These institutions exist, and they are the political face of todayโs struggle. But engagement with them must be on our terms, with wisdom and unity. Entering politics must never dilute our principles nor compromise our dignity. If guided by Qurโan and Sunnah, political struggle becomes a form of jihadโa noble struggle for justice, dignity, and the fulfillment of the peace agreements.
Therefore, our way forward is clear: engage in governance, but do not rush into it. Let our political cadres carry this responsibility, while the broader movement preserves its moral compass and revolutionary spirit. In this way, we protect the sacrifices of our martyrs, uphold the trust of our people, and remain steadfast in our Sacred Quest for peace and development in the Bangsamoro.
Brothers and sisters, let us move with patience (sabr), with wisdom (hikmah), and with sincerity (ikhlas). Let us remind ourselves that every step we take must be for Allah (SWT) and for the dignity of our people. Politics is not our end; it is only a means. Our end remains the same: to attain justice, freedom, and lasting peace for the Bangsamoro.
May Allah (SWT) guide our leaders, strengthen our unity, and protect us from the traps of this world. And may He make our struggle a continuous jihad fi sabilillah until the light of peace and development shines fully upon our Homeland Bangsamoro, Insha Allah.
