THE MASA HUB: Kneading the Future of Cuenca
“Communication is merely an exchange of information, but connection is an exchange of our humanity.”
Designed to address the town’s lack of essential public spaces where social interactions are expected to foster and local artisans should be celebrated, the MASA Hub will serve as a vital, multi-functional community hub providing multiple areas for multiple social activities. Rooted in social interaction and cultural preservation, the project aims to converge the community with the goal of celebrating the town’s unique identity.
Inspired by the communal ties of the 'masses' and the local 'Tinapayan Festival’ of Cuenca, the MASA concept envisions a multi-functional public community hub. The physical structure and flexibility of dough (masa) served as the core design metaphor, allowing the space to transform. This conceptual hub is divided into four essential, multi-functional areas, embodying the material's dynamic adaptability. Additionally, the space is strategically designed to bridge the gap between the availability of public space and importance of social interaction, effectively integrating the town's rich cultural legacy into diverse activities and shared spaces.
The MASA Hub is designed to be a physical expression of the town's unique identity, deeply rooted in social interaction and cultural preservation. At its core are four essential public spaces, each uniquely named after a beloved local bread, transforming familiar culinary tradition into accessible, functional spaces:
Pandesal: Open Community Space, an open and accessible hall, intentionally designed to foster casual social interaction and spontaneous community engagement.
Bonete: Bread Making Workshop Area, dedicated to preserving and educating the community about the rich history of tinapay (bread) through engaging, hands-on activities.
Kababayan: Community Hall, a central gathering point for meetings, assemblies, and diverse community events, fostering town-wide connection.
Ensaymada: Art Gallery, a dynamic platform for local arts and crafts, specifically designed to support and uplift the town's artisans and the greater art community.
This innovative design serves not just as a hub, but as a physical expression of Cuenca’s unique identity, converging the people and the rich cultural legacy.
