DAPITAN CITY โ€” City Mayor Evelyn โ€œBelenโ€ T. Uy has formally signed and submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for review and approval the proposed comprehensive ordinance strengthening the protection, preservation, and proper management of the Dapitan City Plaza and its historic features, marking another concrete step in the City Governmentโ€™s commitment to safeguard Dapitanโ€™s heritage.

The proposed measure follows concerns raised by Dapitanons regarding activities within the City Plaza, particularly the reported disregard of existing restrictions protecting the historic Relief Map of Mindanao and other significant areas within the heritage complex. In response, the City Government immediately initiated a review of existing local ordinances governing the plaza, some of which date as far back as 1998, and recognized the need for a more comprehensive framework capable of responding to present-day tourism, conservation, public-use, and enforcement challenges.

True to its commitment to act on these concerns, the City Government moved with the preparation of a consolidated measure that seeks to strengthen rules on the use of the plaza, improve the protection of historically significant structures, clarify responsibilities among concerned offices, and promote greater public awareness and participation in heritage conservation.

The proposed ordinance also advances a whole-of-community approach to heritage protection, recognizing that preserving Dapitanโ€™s historic spaces cannot be the responsibility of government alone. It seeks to strengthen coordination among City Government offices, schools, tourism stakeholders, residents, visitors, and other institutions, including the education sector, in cultivating greater respect for the Cityโ€™s cultural and historical assets.

The submission of the ordinance delivers on the City Governmentโ€™s earlier commitment that a comprehensive measure would be prepared and transmitted to the Sanggunian following the review of existing policies and the concerns raised by the public.

For Mayor Belen Uyโ€™s administration, the initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that development under the Bag-ong Dapitan agenda remains firmly anchored on the protection of the Cityโ€™s history and identity.

As Dapitan continues to position itself as a leading heritage and tourism destination, the City Government maintains that progress must go hand in hand with preservation, ensuring that landmarks such as the City Plaza and the Relief Map of Mindanao are not only protected today, but passed on with dignity and meaning to future generations.

Promises made. Promises delivered. Heritage protected for the generations to come.

The City Government of Dapitan sustained its environmental conservation efforts with a tree planting activity in Barangay Antipolo today, advancing its ongoing campaign to build a greener and more sustainable community.

A total of 30 native tree seedlingsโ€”consisting of 15 Narra and 15 Lumbayao speciesโ€”were successfully planted to restore green spaces, strengthen local biodiversity, and contribute to long-term environmental protection.

The activity was led by City Councilor Raul Carreon, alongside personnel from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and officials of Barangay Antipolo. Their collective participation underscored the vital collaboration between the local government unit and community leaders in pushing for active environmental stewardship.

This planting initiative forms part of the cityโ€™s broader commitment to protecting and preserving Dapitan's natural ecosystem. Beyond planting native trees across various barangays, the local government also spearheads weekly coastal clean-ups every Tuesday across different coastal communities to maintain clean shorelines and safeguard marine habitats.

Through these consistent environmental programs, the City Government of Dapitan remains dedicated to building a cleaner, greener, and more climate-resilient city while inspiring every Dapitanon to take an active role in protecting the environment for future generations.

The City Administrator's Office and the City Tourism Office convened a coordination meeting with private utility and telecommunications providers today, August 6, 2026, at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Session Hall, Government Center, to synchronize preparations for the upcoming Lawaan Rotunda Project.

The meeting focused on establishing a unified timeline for utility clearing operations and relocating existing power and telecommunications lines. These proactive measures aim to facilitate smooth project implementation while minimizing service disruptions to residents and businesses.

The coordination meeting was led by OIC City Tourism Officer Jervie Padrones and attended by OIC City Engineer Roy Amador, representatives from the City Engineer's Office, and major utility and telecommunications providers, including PLDT and Cruztelco.

Participants discussed technical requirements, utility mapping, and operational strategies to systematically address overlapping aerial cables and underground utility connections within the project area. These collaborative discussions are expected to streamline site preparation ahead of construction.

The Lawaan Rotunda Project will feature a 46-foot historical monument honoring Dr. Jose P. Rizal, commemorating his enduring legacy during his exile in Dapitan and further strengthening the city's historical and cultural identity.

With project funding secured and utility mapping now underway, the City Government is set to hold the formal groundbreaking ceremony on August 12, 2026. Through the continued collaboration of government offices and private stakeholders, the Lawaan Rotunda Project moves one step closer to the start of construction.
