Geology students from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) stepped out of the traditional classroom setting to gain practical experience through their On-the-Job Training (OJT) program at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XI (MGB XI) in Davao City.

The internship program bridged academic theory with field application, exposing trainees to the daily responsibilities of professional geologists. The hands-on training built technical proficiency while reinforcing the role geologists play in public safety, sustainable resource management, and environmental protection across the Davao Region.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XI (MGB XI) conducted a specialized technical training and workshop focused on enhancing geochemical testing and analytical capabilities for geological and mining assessments.

The session focused on operating and utilizing the Olympus Vanta Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (pXRF) analyzer for non-destructive element identification and accurate geochemical characterization of geological and mining samples directly in the field or laboratory settings.

Attendees learned to combine high-precision screening via pXRF with detailed optical examination using a Stereo Zoom Microscope to improve reliability in sample verification, phase identification, and resource evaluation.

With this capacity-building initiative, MGB XI will strengthen its technical expertise in fast-tracking mineral characterization
and improving fieldwork precision.

DAVAO CITY — The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XI (MGB-XI) deployed a technical assessment team today, August 8, 2026, to investigate reports of river discoloration and heavy siltation along the rivers of Barangays Causwagan and Maputi in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental, following heavy rains.

The on-site investigation aims to determine the root cause of the discoloration and evaluate actual field conditions. To ensure a thorough inquiry, MGB-XI is closely coordinating with the local government unit of Banaybanay.

Following the assessment, the team will evaluate environmental impacts and identify appropriate immediate actions to address the siltation.

MGB-XI remains committed to upholding environmental standards, ensuring responsible resource management, and safeguarding the health, livelihoods, and ecosystems of local communities.

ICYMI:

MGB XI actively participated in the simultaneous DENR XI One-Stop Shop activities conducted in the Municipalities of Asuncion, New Corella in Davao del Norte, and Monkayo in Davao de Oro. Through the initiative, MGB XI provided accessible frontline services, technical assistance, and information on the responsible management and sustainable development of the region’s mineral resources, bringing government services closer to local communities.

Protecting our natural resources isn't a task any single agency can tackle alone. It takes a coordinated, unified effort on the ground. Recognizing this, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XI (MGB XI), in partnership with the Regional Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee (RLECC) XI, recently conducted a comprehensive Mining Deputization Seminar. Grounded in the theme "Strengthening Inter-Agency Collaboration in Protecting Mineral Resources and Combating Illegal Mining."

Illegal mining does more than bypass regulations—it threatens local ecosystems, deprives communities of lawful economic benefits, and creates significant safety hazards. Building a resilient defense requires empowering our partners in law enforcement with a clear understanding of environmental laws and enforcement procedures.

Through deputization, designated officers gain the regulatory insight and authority required to assist in monitoring, apprehending, and prosecuting violators effectively across the region. Spearheaded by Mines Management Division Chief Atty. Brenice Ann Gendeve-Castillo, EM, the intensive seminar equipped frontline officers with key legal frameworks and sustainable practices, featuring discussions on:

1. Understanding Republic Act No. 7942 (Philippine Mining Act of 1995)
Participants walked through the core provisions of R.A. 7942, examining the legal boundaries governing mineral exploration, extraction, and utilization. Topics included:

Beyond basic enforcement, the discussions emphasized why responsible mining matters. Technical experts highlighted how strict governance and policy compliance safeguard surrounding communities and eco-systems.

By equipping our partner law enforcers with key regulatory tools, we are scaling up our effort to protect our ecosystems and secure sustainable mineral development across the region.
