DIGOS CITY โ€“ The City Government of Digos paid tribute to the men and women who serve on the frontlines of emergencies as it concluded the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month through the 3rd Volunteers' Summit on July 31, 2026, at the City Gymnasium.

The summit brought together disaster response volunteers, barangay responders, and partner organizations in recognition of their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and strengthening community resilience. The gathering also highlighted the vital role of volunteerism in building a safer and more disaster-ready Digos City.

In his welcome message, Vice Mayor Atty. Johari Baรฑa, Vice Chairperson of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), underscored the indispensable role of volunteers in safeguarding communities during emergencies. He commended their selfless dedication to public service and expressed hope that more Digosenos would be inspired to volunteer and actively participate in disaster preparedness initiatives.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Davao Region Regional Director Ednar Dayanghirang emphasized the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness and response at the purok level, stressing that resilient communities are built from the grassroots. He likewise encouraged the CDRRMC to formulate a 10-year Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan to provide a sustainable and long-term framework for the city's resilience programs.

Joining the recognition of the volunteers were Acting CDRRM Officer John Basil Sevilla, City Administrator Rex Cagas, City Councilors Hon. Liza M. Cagas and Hon. Nestor "Jay" Aldeguer Jr., and Technical Adviser Samuel Miralles, who expressed the local government's gratitude for the volunteers' invaluable service and commitment to public safety.

Participating organizations included the 1101st Community Defense Center, Kabalikat Radiocom Philippines, Davao del Sur Emergency Volunteers, Radio Amateurs Group of Davao Region Inc., Recon Dexie Star, Recon Dream, Active Life Emergency Rescue Team, UM Digos College Disaster Emergency Response Team, Philippine Red Crossโ€“Davao del Sur Chapter, Girl Scouts of the Philippinesโ€“Davao del Sur Chapter, Boy Scouts of the Philippinesโ€“Davao del Sur Chapter, Digos Filipino-Chinese Fire Volunteer Cooperative, Aplaya Rescue Team 911, and Traverse Volunteer Group. Representatives from the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs) of Barangays Aplaya, Binaton, Cogon, Dulangan, Goma, Kapatagan, Ruparan, San Jose, San Miguel, Zone I, and Zone III also participated.

The activity concluded with the presentation of accomplishment reports by volunteer organizations and the awarding of winners in the Barangay DRRM Committee Rescuelympics conducted on July 30. Barangay Zone III was declared overall champion, followed by Barangay Kapatagan as first runner-up and Barangay Zone I as second runner-up. Cash prizes, plaques of recognition, and consolation awards were presented to participating teams.

The successful culmination of National Disaster Resilience Month reaffirmed the City Government of Digos, under the leadership of Mayor Josef Fortich Cagas, in promoting volunteerism and strengthening partnerships that advance disaster preparedness, emergency response, and resilient communities.

SCHOOLS DRRM AND EARTHQUAKE DRILL TRAINING ORIENTATION

July 28, 2026 - In line with the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) 2026, the City Government of Digos, through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), conducted the Schools Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Orientation and Earthquake Drill for participating public and private schools in Digos City.

The activity was designed to strengthen the disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities of school administrators, teachers, non-teaching personnel, and learners by providing them with essential knowledge and practical skills in disaster risk reduction and management. Participants received orientation on earthquake hazards, school emergency preparedness, hazard identification, evacuation planning, and established emergency response protocols to help foster a culture of safety and resilience within the school community.

Through this initiative, the City Government of Digos and the CDRRMO reaffirm their commitment to promoting disaster resilience by enhancing the preparedness of educational institutions and ensuring that schools remain safe learning environments through continuous capacity-building activities and regular emergency drills.
