PROUD PARENT BARANGAY KIOBOG, DON MARCELINO! π΅π
A remarkable discovery has unfolded along the shores of Sitio Baybay, Barangay Kiobog, Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental β the documentation in the Philippines of Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) hatchlings making their way toward the open sea.
This significant event highlights the importance of continued tracing, monitoring, documentation, and protection of Leatherback Turtles in the Philippines, particularly in areas where their presence may remain largely undocumented.
Thanks to the Locals and specifically to Hanna Uso, Edmond Lagunsay Calupon, Ricardo Snyder and BLGU Kiobog headed by Punong Barangay, Eligio Garte.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for conducting CEPA (Communication, Education and Public Awareness) activities and for strengthening awareness and community participation in the conservation of marine turtles.
Special recognition is also extended to Matt Rutledge, Herpetologist, whose dedicated work in tracing, studying, documenting, and advocating for the protection of Leatherback Turtles contributes greatly to understanding and safeguarding this remarkable species. π’π
The emergence of these hatchlings is more than a beautiful sightβit is a reminder that our coastal communities can play an important role in protecting critical habitats and ensuring that these ancient travelers continue to return to Philippine shores.
From the sands of Kiobog to the vast Philippine seas, every hatchling carries a message.
