Dumaguete City makes history as it is officially named a UNESCO Creative City of Literature — the first in Southeast Asia to receive the honor, alongside Jakarta.

HOW DUMAGUETE DID IT: FROM LOI TO UNESCO CITY OF LITERATURE

On August 28, 2024, Dumaguete submitted its Letter of Intent to apply for the UNESCO Creative City of Literature designation — anchored on four solid strengths:

📍 Asia’s Longest-Running Writers’ Workshop
📚 Over 100,000 Library Volumes Supporting Research & Creativity
🎭 Vibrant Literary Culture & Festivals Nurturing Homegrown Writers
✨ Strong Support Systems for Local Creatives

These became the foundation of Dumaguete’s bid — proving that literature here is not just heritage but a living culture embraced by the community.

October 31, 2025 – HISTORY MADE

Today, UNESCO officially declared Dumaguete as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature, placing our city on the world map of creative and literary excellence.

This victory belongs to the community — readers, writers, educators, youth, creatives, and citizens who kept the literary spirit alive.
