Joseph Gabriel Cortel, a fourth-year Political Science student and current Vice President for External Affairs of the Political Science Society, represented the Philippines as a youth delegate at the ASEAN Youth Summit on Digital Resilience and Responsible Use of New Technologies held last August 4โ€“7 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

Hosted by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in partnership with the National Youth Commission (NYC), the summit was conducted as part of the Philippinesโ€™ Chairmanship of ASEAN and brought together youth delegates from ASEAN member states to discuss digital resilience, responsible technology use, and emerging technologies.

Cortel participated in the summit to represent the Philippines, engage with fellow ASEAN youth like from Brunei, Malaysia and deepen his understanding of digital resilience and emerging technologies, and contribute to the development of the ASEAN Youth Statement on Digital Resilience.

Despite having no formal background in technology or digital policy, Cortel entered the summit with an academic foundation in Political Science and international relations, alongside his experience in youth leadership and grassroots policymaking.

For Cortel, the experience also offered a different perspective on ASEAN cooperation. Having been critical of how countries with different political systems, cultures, and interests could meaningfully work together, he said the summit allowed him to see ASEAN beyond institutions and agreements.

On July 25, 2026, the NDDU Political Science Society conducted its first general assembly. The society welcomed its members back to another academic year, introduced its new set of officers, its newly amended Constitution and By-Laws, and discussed plans of the society moving forward.
