It has been 128 years since the Filipino revolutionary government led by President Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed our nationβs independence from Spanish rule in Kawit, Cavite in 1898. Independence Day was celebrated until 1901 when the First Philippine Republic ended. After our independence was recognized internationally, it was celebrated on 4 July from 1946 until 1964 when Republic Act No. 4166 restored June 12 as Independence Day.
