“From sustainable tourism to regenerative destinations—creating lasting value for people, communities, and the environment.”

The MSU–IIT Center for Resiliency (MCR), through Mr. Alfredo Aguilar Jr., MSc, LPT, Science Research Technician, participated in Week 6 of the Iligan Sustainability and Green Economy Action Lab Learning Series, featuring the session “Regenerative Tourism and Green Destinations,” held on August 13, 2026, via Google Meet.

The learning session explored how tourism can move beyond simply minimizing its environmental impact and instead contribute to restoring ecosystems, strengthening communities, and creating lasting local value.

The discussion highlighted the potential of regenerative tourism and green destinations in promoting environmental stewardship, community resilience, and sustainable local development. It provided valuable perspectives on how tourism can become a positive force for communities and ecosystems while supporting more sustainable and resilient local economies.

The participation of MCR provided an opportunity to gain valuable insights that can further support the Center's continuing work in resilience-building, sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and community-centered planning.

The activity also strengthened the continuing engagement between MSU-IIT and the City Government of Iligan through the Center for Digital Iligan Innovation and Sustainability (CDIIS), promoting knowledge exchange and collaborative learning toward a more sustainable and resilient city.

“Innovating our food systems today to build a more sustainable, secure, and resilient tomorrow.”

The MSU–IIT Center for Resiliency (MCR), led by Dir. Melgie A. Alas, MMBM, PGDSDS, and the School of Interdisciplinary Studies - MSU - Iligan Institute of Technology (SIS), led by Dean Prof. Peter D. Suson, DiSDS, participated in Week 5 of the Iligan Sustainability and Green Economy Action Lab Learning Series, featuring the session “Food Innovation for Sustainability and Green Economy,” held on August 6, 2026, via Google Meet.

The learning session explored the role of food innovation, sustainable agriculture, and collaborative approaches in strengthening food security, empowering communities, and supporting the transition toward a greener and more resilient economy.

The session featured Paul Hui Lagura, Head of the Center for Digital Iligan Innovation and Sustainability (CDIIS), City Consultant on Innovation Governance and Lead for SMART Cities Iligan, and Christine Jodloman, Executive Director of AGREA Foundation, who shared perspectives and insights on innovative and sustainable approaches to food systems and local development.

Participation in the learning series provided MCR and SIS with valuable opportunities to expand their understanding of sustainable food systems and explore approaches that can support community resilience, sustainable livelihoods, food security, and green economic development.

The activity also strengthened the continuing collaboration between MSU–IIT and the City Government of Iligan, through the Center for Digital Iligan Innovation and Sustainability (CDIIS), in promoting knowledge exchange, innovation, and sustainability-oriented initiatives for the city.

📸 IN PHOTOS | MSU-IIT Strengthens Student Resilience Through DRRM and Behavior-Based Safety Training

“Building resilience begins with preparedness, discipline, and a commitment to keeping others safe.”

The MSU–IIT Center for Resiliency (MCR) successfully conducted the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) Training for the members of the MSU-IIT Student Emergency Resilience Division (SERD) on August 1–4, 2026.

The four-day training brought together student volunteers from various colleges and academic units of MSU-IIT, providing them with essential knowledge, skills, and practical competencies in disaster preparedness, risk reduction, emergency response, and behavior-based safety. The activity aimed to further develop MCR-SERD members as capable and responsible partners in promoting safety, preparedness, and resilience within the University community.

Serving as Key Resource Persons of the Training were MCR Director Melgie A. Alas, MMBM, PGDSDS, Mr. Diapar Arnold N. Banding, Focal Point Person and Training Coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, and Mr. Alfredo A. Aguilar Jr., MSc, LPT, Focal Point Person for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation. Their active involvement in the training provided the participants with guidance, technical insights, and practical perspectives on disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and safety.

The activity was formally approved by the Office of the University Chancellor, led by Prof. Atty. Alizedney M. Ditucalan, JD, LLD, and endorsed by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Services, led by Prof. Rohane M. Derogongan, PhD, reflecting the University's institutional commitment to strengthening student participation in disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and campus safety.

More than a training activity, the initiative served as an avenue for developing a stronger culture of preparedness, accountability, safety, and volunteerism among MSU-IIT students. By equipping MCR-SERD members with relevant knowledge and practical skills, the University continues to develop student leaders who can contribute meaningfully to emergency preparedness and response within the campus and the communities they serve.

The participation of students from different academic units further highlights the University's whole-of-institution approach to disaster resilience, where students are empowered not only as beneficiaries of safety programs but also as active partners in protecting lives and strengthening campus resilience.
