The Department of the Interior and Local Government Region X (DILG 10) hosted a focus group discussion and workshop on the establishment of the Civil Society Organization (CSO) Academy, with Iligan City identified as one of the pilot local government units in the region. The activity was facilitated by Dr. Dixon Yasay and provided a venue to discuss the proposed direction, structure, and possible areas of collaboration for the CSO Academy. Iligan City was represented by participants from the City Government, Mindanao State UniversityโIligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), DILG, and the Iligan Peopleโs Council.
The discussions focused on the capacity-building needs of CSOs and how the proposed academy can provide practical learning opportunities that will strengthen their participation in local governance. Participants shared their experiences and perspectives on existing mechanisms for CSO engagement, as well as areas where additional support may be needed. The participation of MSU-IIT also opened possibilities for academic and technical support, while the Iligan Peopleโs Council provided the perspective of organized civil society based on its experience in local engagement.
As one of the pilot LGUs in Region X, Iligan City has an opportunity to contribute to the development of the CSO Academy by sharing local experiences, concerns, and recommendations. The workshop allowed the different sectors to look at how the academy can be shaped around the actual needs of CSOs and the local government, rather than relying solely on conventional training activities.
The activity also underscored the importance of continued coordination among government, civil society, and academic institutions in developing the CSO Academy. Iligan Cityโs participation in the pilot phase is an opportunity to help shape an initiative that can strengthen the capacity of CSOs and encourage more meaningful participation in local governance.
