The Political Science Society (PSS) of MSU-IIT concluded its General Elections 2026 on June 4, electing new year-level representatives through an online voting process conducted from May 11 to June 2.
Organized by the PSS Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the polls drew participation from Political Science students across different year levels and filled several council positions for the upcoming academic year. However, the elections also revealed a decline in the number of students seeking elected office, resulting in vacancies that may require a special election in the next academic year.
Not including the current 4th year students, there is a total of 114 eligible voters, with 84 students casting their ballots for an overall voter turnout of ๐ณ๐ฏ.๐ฒ๐ด%.
The elections sought to fill 12 positions within the PSS Council, but only 6 positions were successfully filled due to the limited number of candidates who filed their certificates of candidacy.
Among the elected representatives, Jumawan secured the second-year representative seat with 23 votes (57.5%) from 28 voters out of 40 eligible students. For the third year level, Respicio received 27 votes (77.14%) while Visitacion garnered 21 votes (60%) from a voter turnout of 28 out of 35 students. Meanwhile, in the fourth year level, Madroรฑal led with 26 votes (66.66%), followed by Batutay with 23 votes (58.97%) and Anticamara with 21 votes (53.84%) from 28 voters out of 39 eligible students.
According to the PSS COMELEC, the elections were conducted through an online voting platform to ensure accessibility and encourage student participation. However, filing of candidacy was constantly pushed to encourage more candidates, causing the election period to be longer.
Despite the successful conduct of the elections, the reduced number of aspiring candidates emerged as a key concern. Compared to the 12 candidates who ran in the previous election cycle, only 6 students filed their candidacies this year.
โThe COMELEC used different strategy to encourage polskies to run for vacant position but there is really a growing concern for low number of candidates for this election. We hope that more people will step up to the challenge and lead PSS in the next school year,โ said Adam Vincent Perez, Chairperson of the PSS COMELEC.
While the elections demonstrated the continued commitment of Political Science students to democratic participation, the decline in candidate numbers underscores the need to cultivate greater interest in student leadership and public service within the organization.
