MARCOS COMPROMISED THE NATION’S INTEREST ON ICC
Pres. Bongbong Marcos has no intention of leaving the International Criminal Court.
If PBBM is planning to do that, he would have mentioned it in his State of the Nation Address. The fact that there was not even a hint about it delivers a strong message that he won’t be joining the ICC exodus as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wants US allies to do.
Secretary Rubio’s call for the abolition of the ICC has gained ground particularly among African and South American countries. The latest to announce its withdrawal from the ICC is Chad which complained that the tribunal was “limited and uneven” and focused on Africa.
Prior to Chad, Venezuela and the military juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger abandoned the ICC, an indication that the tribunal has become an international pariah and that the departures are not solely on the basis of the calls made by Secretary Rubio and the US.
PBBM, however, seems oblivious to the US call for its allies to leave the ICC. While Malacañang has been saying the right words, the message is clear that PBBM has no plans of joining the US-led campaign against ICC during his term.
The US knows PBBM is merely taking his time and responded with a painful message.
President Donald Trump’s announcement imposing 12.5% tariffs on select Philippine exports after PBBM “politely” declined the call to leave the ICC is too much of a coincidence. Filipinos are the ones paying the price for PBBM’s intransigence. The sad part is that the tariffs, an anomaly since even non-US allies were not subjected to it, is only the beginning.
Hakbang ng Maisug has consistently opposed PBBM’s collaboration with the ICC even before fPRRD’s scandalous and shameless kidnapping. Since its inception, the ICC is nothing more than the face of hypocritical and selective justice against Third World countries.
Hakbang ng Maisug reiterates its support to Secretary Rubio’s campaign against the ICC not only because the reasons stated earlier. It sees the ICC abolition as the means to right the wrongs, however late, inflicted on fPRRD by giving him the liberty that was snatched from him.
More importantly, PBBM’s refusal to leave the ICC will cause more harm and suffering to Filipinos. It proves that PBBM does not care for the welfare and the benefit of the nation if it goes against his interest. Marcos has compromised the interest of the nation. This must stop.
ABOLISH THE ICC! BRING PRRD HOME NOW!
