Iloiloโs continuing progress is not the work of government alone, but the result of generations of Ilonggos who choose to contribute, serve, and believe in what the city can become, Iloilo City Mayor Raisa S. Treรฑas said during the Mayorโs Dinner on August 25.
She highlighted the people behind the cityโs transformation, from hardworking families and entrepreneurs to educators, professionals, community leaders, volunteers, and ordinary Ilonggos who continue to make a difference.
The progress seen todayโin improved roads and public spaces, modernized markets and infrastructure, stronger support for businesses, and investments in healthcare, education and tourismโreflects a city that is not only growing but becoming safer, cleaner, more accessible, and more livable.
โThese are not just projects on paper. These are progress that our people can see and experience every day,โ Treรฑas said.
At the Mayorโs Dinner, the City Government recognized 21 Mayorโs Choice Awardees, five Mayorโs Citation Awardees, and the 10 Outstanding Ilonggos of 2026 for their achievements, service, and contributions to the community.
For Treรฑas, the recognitions represent the stories of people who have spent years working, sacrificing, and serving without necessarily seeking recognition.
โWhen I look at the names on this list, I do not just see awardsโI see people, stories, and years of hard work, sacrifice, and service,โ she said.
Treรฑas emphasized that the strength of Iloilo lies in its people and their willingness to participate in the cityโs progress.
โGovernment can create programs, provide services, and open opportunities, but we cannot build a better Iloilo alone,โ she said.
โWe need people who care. People who are willing to step up, share their time and talents, and be part of something bigger than themselves.โ
She also underscored her vision of an Iloilo that future generations can inheritโa city where young people can dream big, discover opportunities, thrive in their chosen fields, and feel safe and secure.
โAs a mother, I ask myself, โAno bala nga Iloilo City ang gusto naton ipanubli sa ila?โโ she said.
Treรฑas acknowledged that leading a city comes with great responsibility, but said the dedication of Ilonggos gives her strength to continue.
โKinahanglan ko guid kamo,โ she said, thanking those who continue to participate, help, and care for the city.
The awardees serve as examples for the next generation of Ilonggos, showing them the value of hard work, service, and community involvement.
She stressed that Iloiloโs future must be built on progress with purposeโeconomic growth that does not leave people behind, modernization that preserves the cityโs identity, and opportunities that benefit the wider community.
She described the cityโs story as one that is written collectively, rather than by one leader, administration, or generation.
